Eiji Tsuburaya and Gore

Postby Darkness » Sun Aug 08, 2010 11:27 am

As we've all heard numerous times, Eiji Tsuburaya didn't want blood in his kaiju films. He had a soft spot for children and thought it would be inappropriate for Godzilla to bleed. So my question is this. If he felt so strongly opposed to gore in the kaiju genre because of children, why was it that he let it slide for the Ultraman series? Did he feel differently because it was a television show, or was the decision not up to him? Can anyone shed any light on this?

Um, the only time, I can remember, a kaiju 'bleeding' in the Ultra universe, was RedKing and Chandlar.

Keep in mind that most of the Ultra series was made AFTER Tsuburaya's death.

Only Ultra Q, Ultraman, and Ultraseven were made in Tsuburaya's lifetime, I believe.

Eleking spewed a fountain of what I beleive, liquidy chocolate syrup.. He's an alien after all...
UltraQ really...you can't tell if someone was bleeding or not.
UltraMan, despite the 'gore' bits of the monsters exploding, only RedKing and Chandlar bled.

In the Godzilla series though,
Anguirus, the first Toho Kaiju to bleed on screen.
Ghidorah, in DAM, being the second Toho Monster to bleed on screen, and this was because Godzilla bit his 'shoulder', while Anguirus bit his neck, then Godzilla stomped on his neck, causing blood to spew out, while Anguirus and Gorosaurus mauled other body parts.

The only other things I could think of as 'Gore', is the dismemberment of certain kaiju. Ebirah and Kamakuras. Or the burning. Kong, Anguirus, Rodan, Kumonga.
Or litterall, falling to peices or dieing a violent death.

Read my book! :P

But seriously, Tsuburaya did not form this opinion until after such episodes of ULTRAMAN were. Also, he wasn't opposed to violence, but rather graphic depictions of blood, or anything that would be considered "too cruel" — because these shows were aimed at children. This axiom was waved as we got into the 1970s shows, since Tsuburaya had passed away, and the times had changed (most Japanese children's television was extremely violent and gory).

Bur wasn't Ultra Seven famous because of it's violence and gore? Tsuburaya was alive back then (Still he may not be in the best condition).

If I remember, the Eye Slugger was reponsible for most of that violence. Eleking, Metron, Bira, Gyeron, and Pandon got the worst side of the Eye Slugger. And Narse got ripped apart as well.

They were also going up against the Gamera series, which are aimed towards children yet extremely bloody.

^Back in the 70's it seems like they did not care how bloody TV shows where. Like the 70's TV anime series of Devilman for example which was pretty violent for a TV show that was on when Kids where watching TV at the time.

Ah, that makes much more sense now. I didn't know that he said that much later on, I figured that he'd said it earlier at some point and for some reason they let the gore slide with Ultraman. Obviously the Godzilla series got more bloody after Tsuburaya's death, but the gore in Ultraman still had me confused none the less.

I think Ghidorah bled in DAM as a way to illustrate and show he was actually dying, not nearly being defeated like in previous appearances.

So he was OK with blood as long as it wasn't too much or too graphic?

Monsters, Godzilla included, don't bleed very often in Toho kaiju films but it does happen every once in a while.

Well, most of his works I've seen doesn't really have any blood in them. The most blood I've seen was in DAM, with Ghidorah being attacked, but that's about it.

I take it you haven't seen Ultraman's fight with Jiras. I wanted to punch UM in the face for being such an ass after that fight.

Actually, now that I think about it..

That fight included Tsuburaya's best creations...I wonder why he had more blood in there than usual.
