I don't think Godzilla is the kind of movie that could be a period piece. I think it would feel really odd.

Not to mention, it could seem that they would be imitating what King Kong did.

I don't see why not. The genesis (both on and off screen) of Godzilla is rooted in the various ups and downs of the Cold War. I'd love to see a film set in that time frame again, but aided with modern technology and hindsight of that time frame. Just the look and aesthetic of the sixties or fifties creates something that's really visually distinct, but the setting also gives a good platform to say something really effective about the Cold War.

Basically a Godzilla film set in the sixties is my "dream come true" project is what I'm sayin'.

I've always wanted to see a remake based in 1954 Japan, with all of the political and national concerns of the era addressed or at least reflected, such as the formation of the JSDF- the appearence of Godzilla would literally be their first test and after the loss and occupation of the last decade or so they would need to prove themselves as not just a pawn of the US for the Cold War. Think of the national pride at stake and the Americans still trying to interfere despite the end of MacArthur's occupation... it could be very cool...

But there's also a lot of people for it taking place in the modern day. Hell, either time period it's unlikely to take place completely in Japan, so why not just do both? Have the prologue take place in 1954 Japan, with everyone stunned by the emergence of the Big G, then he disappears and all the nations of the world tool up ever since, but with all these years in between many have forgotten or even don't believe he'll return... it could make for an interesting concept...
