Geez,you are so pessimistic.

Holy shit, shimmattia, excuse me for offering my opinion. If it was anyone but me would you have said a damn thing? Jesus Christ, has this gotten old.

Shut up.

Why don't you want Toho to make anymore Godzilla movies?

They've lost their way with the character. It's really as simply as that.

I voted I'm fine with what we're getting. I am optimistic than LP will make something at least as good as the better Millennium or Heisei movies. If not, then Toho can get back at it. Personally I'm interested in Godzilla 201x and Cloverfield 2 to see which American company can make the better monster movie. One has a tremendously iconic monster, but an image to work around. The other has only one movie, but it was successful and had quite the viral marketing campaign.

Legion1979 wrote:I don't think Toho should make any more Godzilla movies...but I really don't want to see an American one either.

You don't want anymore Godzilla movies then? Or someone else other than Toho and anyone from America?

Legion1979 wrote:They've lost their way with the character. It's really as simply as that.

Personally, I feel like each of the three eras had weak points where it seemed like Toho wasn't really trying anymore, no matter which demographic they were aiming at. The Heisei had some very weak movies and the Millennium had some mediocre/half-arsed efforts. But I still think both of those eras had something to offer. Both had some of my favorite movies in the entire Godzilla collection and in the greater giant monster niche. I know I'm not alone.

So all of that aside, I think whether LP does Godzilal right or not, there is no reason to believe that no one could ever get Godzilla right again. ;)

Well, I think it's up to the filmmaker. I think if a seriously good crew were allowed to make a Godzilla film, then I think we would be seeing something interesting. And they should be allowed to be able to do a movie with monsters other than King Ghidorah, Mothra, Mechagodzilla ect.

He speaks the truth, though.

Anyway, I'm glad we're getting an American movie. The thought of a big-budget Godzilla movie done with modern FX is damn exciting.

In light of garbage like GINO and Godzilla Final Wars I don't think it's pessimistic to say that perhaps Godzilla's film career is indeed over and that we should enjoy what we've gotten in the past instead of wondering about what we're getting in the future.

There's a chance that LP's movie might turn out to be a good film and it might end up being successful. But I've always looked at Godzilla as something that belongs in Japan and only works as a Japanese franchise - and even they can't get it right half the time. I'm not as big a fan of Godzilla as a character as I am a fan of the movies he's starred in and the techniques and talent used to bring him to life. No matter how well done, I can't see any American Godzilla movie appealing to me very much, especially in the serious, CGI Hollywood system we're living in now.

Christ in a handbag, is there anything ya'll don't argue over?

Ya know what? I have no opinion on the matter. How can you even remotely have a preference when we don't even know what direction this American movie would take? At this point, forming an opinion would be based on nothing more than assumptions.

Ask the question a year from now.

Even when Toho has screwed up a Godzilla movie they've at least come back better. Take Spacegodzilla for instance. Terrible, but various people think much higher of Destroyah and the Millenniums that followed. I'd rather have another Millennium-grade serious than a big ol' pile of nothin'. GAM or GMK will never have the iconic status of the better known Showas but they're still fine in their own right. Toho just needs to spend time to make sure each film is great rather than stick to aims of pumping out a new film every year or so.

Well, seeing the differences in the American and Japanese film industry, I think it is safe to say that one could have a preference for what one wants: A high budget CGI Godzilla film (American film) with or a lower budget suitmation Godzilla film (Japanese film).

I agree, to an extent.

I mean, I'd like to see more Godzilla movies, but I dont want to see him get dragged through the mud (again) or get passed around by shit directors and writers.

This may sound a bit biased, but I would probably feel more comfortable when hearing news of a Japanese Godzilla movie instead of an American one, simply because Godzilla has been a big part of Japanese pop culture for so long. It just seems like the folks in Japan would have a better understanding of Godzilla. They (as in, Toho) just havent really gotten their act together.

This. While I would like to see a new Toho Godzilla film, I think it's time to have Godzilla to get another big shot in Hollywood and could be either a big hit or a major flop. Only time will tell, but I think the movie has a fair chance to be good. I'm still looking forward how Edwards will handle Godzilla since he seems to care about the character well enough to do a movie out of him.

That doesn't mean a thing. You can screw it up right out of the gate with either industry. The preference shouldn't based on what type of budget the film has. It should be based on things like the direction of the film, the casting, the story, even the production team. Saying, "I'd prefer a big-budget CGI-fest" or "I want suitmation!" is ridiculously shallow. What's being asked is to form an opinion based on no information. There's nothing, really, to compare it to. The question should be, "Do you want something new or something tried-and-true?"

I just want a film I can enjoy. I don't care if it's Hollywood or Toho. And I won't make a judgment on which I'd prefer without knowing at least who is in the production team. To me, it's just not a fair question. But I also analyze things to death.

Neither do I. But if the bottom doesn't fall out, I expect to know more about the film by this time next year.

I see no wrong with Legendaryzilla. A second shot is all he needs. There are ways to make this work, I hope LP and Toho know that.
