It's pretty much guaranteed that "Godzilla 201x" will be independent of all three prior series. In fact, it's also not crazy to suspect that it will have its own origin like the last American Godzilla movie and not even reference Gojira.

I'm positive this is what's happening. The origin might reflect what happened in 1954 but it's definitely not going to directly reference a 55+ year old movie that a segment of the audience might not have seen.
