How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
Title says it all. If you could, how would you of fixed Godzilla (2014) since many seen it as flawed. Personally for me what I would change is.
-Keep the dark tone but add levity similar to that of Wonder Woman, Apes reboot trilogy and Logan.
-No BS cutaways (Seriously Gareth Edwards. Godzilla is not skreeonking Jaws, there's a difference between a giant monster in a city and a large predatory fish in the ocean, even then the decade absence of Godzilla was long enough that suspense wasn't needed).
-Give Godzilla more screen time and have the finale battle be longer, have a short fight between the male MUTO and Godzilla at the least three minutes long.
-Kill off Ford Brody and have Joe Brody be the main character instead or better yet just keep Joe Brody as a main character and have his son be a side character instead.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
Realistically the movie would have been loads better if:
A) Godzilla was a little less late 60s early 70s showa and actually broke stuff and stomped military
B) you cut the train sequence had the scrap between Godzy and Mr. MUTO be an actual fight.
Really I think B is more crucial here, the human drama would have been better received if there was one or two more epic monster action peices to break up the human plot. I personally would have preferred Godzilla to do some destruction though, then kick ass and take names. I loved the MUTOs and that Gareth gave them personality, even though the execution was off I feel like he really got what made the old TOHO monsters awesome.

-It wouldn't had been a verses film
-Godzilla would be the primary focus with the story centered more around characters representing day to day civilians (The 2012 mood piece speaks volumes showing the devistation of Godzilla's wrath and the people who fell victim to such event)
-A broader cast of extras whereby each is somehow effected by Godzilla's presence (Ford carried the entire load which made his character seem ridiculous)
-An ending that carried more weight.

I wouldn't. Why fix something I don't think is broken?
I unapologetically, wholeheartedly, and without a doubt hate Godzilla vs Kong.

Talking small fixes? You have two choices, edit it down to make it tighter or add to it for better character development and a stronger emotional resonance. At least put back some of the scenes that were cut like the halo jump speech or Serizawa interviewing the miners.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
The movie wasn't bad, but minor fixes could have made the film a hell of a lot better.
#1. NOT killing of Bryan Cranston until the end of the film or climax, leaving him as the lead Aaron Taylor as supporting character
#2. Actually showing us the damn short fight at the airport.
#3. Not cutting away during the ONLY day-time fight sequence between Godzilla and the male MUTO, plus the Military battle at the bridge.
#4. Having Godzilla feel as the main character in his own movie, and feeling his presence throughout even when not on screen. This was severely lacking.
In my opinion this would have added a lot more to the character department, plus given Godzilla just enough screen-time throughout to satisfy but still leave you wanting more for the sequel.

1. Keep Joe Brody, and make him the main character
2. Don't cut away from the airport fight and the Los Vegas attack, you can do the door closing tease though
3. Have Joe and Serizawa team up, with Joe wanting to kill all the monsters by any means and Serizawa saying to let Godzilla do the work.
4. Give Godzilla more presence.
5. Trim and edit a few scenes

I would have Joe Brody last at least until the half-way point
Have the Monarch group express regret over keeping the Mutos a secret.

1. Joe doesn't die till the end. He and his Son travel patching things up. Joe is the one that gets to idea to destroy the nest. The female kills Joe in the boat but this seals her fate with Godzilla.
2. The Hawaii battle is quick bit is shown, a 90 second fight would be good here.
3. The battle between the male and Godzilla in San Fran is a 30 to 60 second fight.
The movie is made lighter during the final fight.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
People bring up not killing Bryan Cranston and I can't agree more. The climax had Brody kill the eggs, and it would've been greater if Bryan Cranston was killed relatively near before the climax to add to it and juxtapose the scene.
I also think while compelling, the gap between the opening scene and later is a little dragged out. Cut down on some stuff.
-Have the Mutos attack the bridge instead of Godzilla.

Show the airport scene. Otherwise, I would have kept the movie as it is.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
I really wouldn't change much. Of course you want more Godzilla, everyone always wants more Godzilla! That being said, having him in it less made every scene way more impactful. Complaining about the cutaways is kind of a moot point, Edwards was hired because he was good at that 'less is more' bit, like in Monsters. It kept the budget down. Without that, who knows if the movie even gets made at all? They didnt know it was going to be a decent hit, it was a huge gamble and it had a low budget for a blockbuster. But to changes? Ehhh...I concur with all the "keep Joe, kill Ford" mentality, or at least kill Joe off at the very end somehow. The rest was great. Maybe get a better actor for Ford, too. Someone with a bit more gravitas.

Simple:
1) Put in Akira Takarada's cameo in the godd*mn movie.
2) Don't kill off Bryan Cranston. Have him and and his son re-bond throughout the ordeal, making a tighter father-son relationship.
3) Play an epic orchestrated cover of "Godzilla's Theme" by John Williams

I wouldn't keep Joe alive till toward the very end but i'd actually give his death some impact and meaning. It wasn't that he died but how he died and how little of an impact his death had that annoys me. He's never really given a proper death scene and when he does die barely anyone reacts to it.

Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
A lot of shit I wanted to say was already said so I will just add in:
-Make the night fight at the end less dark. I know the city lights are out and all but you can still have fires and explosions, gas lines explode and buildings catch on fire all the time in kaiju flicks. Christ the city lights are all out in Shin Godzilla for his big Atomic Breath scene and not once did I have a hard time telling what was going on. What makes this even more baffling is they knew to light up the airport fight with fires and explosions and even before Godzilla got there, I could see him and everything else fine as he made it to the airport. It's like they ran out of time on the last fight and tried to cover unfinished CGI there.
- Have Godzilla ray melt something! Look I know you wanna make him the hero but you can still have the male MUTO grab him while he's shooting the female and show his breath melt cars like candle wax and catch a few buildings on fire, show glass melt from his breath, etc.
-Las Vegas in the day time...no. Just fucking no. I've always thought it'd be cool to see a fight on the strip with all the casino, bar and club lights, but you can't really have that in daytime or with a monster that "pinches" electromagnetic waves like a false EMP. And they did both, that's two missteps.

Re: How would you fix Godzilla (2014)?
If Edwards wanted to have less screen time for Godzilla fine, just don't tease us with cutaways, there were other ways of doing that without doing those. I'll say it again for skreeonk sakes Edwards. Godzilla is not skreeonking Jaws. There's a difference between a giant monster in a city and a large predatory fish in the ocean. An decade long absence was long enough for build-up that teasing wasn't needed.Relair wrote:Complaining about the cutaways is kind of a moot point, Edwards was hired because he was good at that 'less is more' bit, like in Monsters.

Change the MUTO's from being a poor man's Cloverfield monster.
