Kong: Skull Island Reviews/Rotten Tomatoes Thread

Post by Ryguy »

I really should be doing something more productive tonight, but I have been unproductive all night after finishing my routine earlier. So why not add a thread for non-user reviews? They are starting to seep in. These DON'T have to be critic reviews right off the bat, but those can be posted here on March 2nd when the embargo lifts.

Social media reactions have been very uplifting, which is great, but this thread should be reserved for full reviews ONLY.

I'm afraid to read any of the reviews because I don't want to spoil anything for myself. I'm just gonna trust you when you say the reviews are good. :-D

I'm being careful myself, but unfortunately it does seem that you need to eliminate internet usage completely should you be trying to avoid spoilers

Details about the credits scene are already polluting Facebook

Added in 23 hours 46 minutes 33 seconds:
The second review has been deleted for who-knows-what reasons. That kinda blows, because that was a really well-written review that was positive as well

Ratings on Letterboxd are just as I expected. The bulk of the ratings are in the 7/10 and 6/10 range, and there aren't any absolutely terrible ratings yet.

Not too shabby, but not great either. It's the same case as with Godzilla

Review on Facebook:
STAY After the Credits!!! I'm still going bannanas over last night's advanced press screening of "Kong: Skull Island." It would've been even better if they had Denzel Washington instead of Sam Jackson engaging in "Gorilla" warefare... that way he would be the one that he "ain't got $#!& on" King Kong (see: "Training Day"). But man, why does Sam Jackson gotta go all Apesh!t on Kong? It's so unfair. Just because he's different. Well, I'm gonna go about my monkey business so, expect my online review on my desk by Monday morning. In the meantime, here's me attempting to play some John Barry music by ear. Enjoy!

5 FLIPPIN' STARS: https://letterboxd.com/film_fantic/film ... -island/1/
Director of Kong Skull Island Jordan Vogt-Roberts has discovered something of a mortal coil for the cinema screen, he swirls you into a giddy existential whirl where it’s impossible to believe what you’re seeing is on a giant cinema screen for a mere but not worthy £8 a pop.
He's crafted the Fury Road of 2017, a reminder of the adventure and visual language to be had in the blockbuster if we let it.
But alas still here it is rearing to go on thousands of screens across the world, and those thousands of screens better be ready to shake, scream and squeal. Why? Because The King is here.

(seeing this at the European premiere was like a kids dream come true!)
3.5/5. Not bad: https://letterboxd.com/jodiefosterarmy/ ... ll-island/
Peter Jacksons Kong was a spider monkey, in scope and film quality, compared to what Jordan Vogt-Roberts was able to do with his version of Kong. It's got laughs, adventure, it throws you in it right from the beginning and it's filled with scenes and moments that will make you jump for joy knowing Vogt-Roberts is lined up to direct Metal Gear Solid.
All the characters are pretty cliche for a film like this but they are played well enough by the excellent cast and bring enough heart and soul to each one to serve their purpose. We aren't really getting huge character arcs or at least not ones you don't see coming but it's always moving along and keeping things entertaining.

Michael Bay should take note on how to film giant CGI things thrashing and throwing each other around. I think the Kong battle scenes were some of my favorite. They are directed so that you are able to see what's going on clearly which makes for breathtaking battle scenes and action sequences.

The beginning is a first rate action adventure opening along the lines of some of the best stuff in Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park.

This is just a fun film that will make up for the amount of shitty blockbusters we got last year.

I can do a whole thing about how great John C. Reily is in this and how much I wanted more from his character but I think you need to experience that for yourself.
4/5: http://blogbaladi.com/movie-review-kong ... land-2017/

Added in 8 hours 27 minutes 12 seconds:
Letterboxd 4/5:
Best Vietnam film since Apocalypse Now. Best Kaiju film since ever. One of the best looking big budget movies period. So many jaw dropping shots. John C. Riley steals the show and Brie Larson steals my heart. That final fight? FUCK. That credits scene? Beautiful.

Kong may be king of Skull Island. But Hollywood just keeps proving studio films are king of 2017.

P.S. See it in IMAX 3D.

It's a shame that Chris Stuckman of all people had to be disappointed by the film;

Chris Stuckman said Shin Godzilla was "more of the same and didn't take risks", and he thought Godzilla 2014 was okay.

I honestly don't know what he wants out of a kaiju movie since he felt meh about both two movies, one that played it safe and one that didn't.

I've never seen a movie anything close to Shin. If it wasn't unique and "didn't take risks" then I must've watched the wrong movie.

I don't think so. There may be a few but I think most reviewers are waiting till around release date before posting their spoiler reviews. There are a few on YouTube though.

My non-spoiler review:

John Goodman and Dr. Dre ask Loki to lead a team of people to Skull Island, because they're looking for something. They then recruit a bunch of soldiers, which includes Eazy-E (Dre and E will go on later, in this universe, to create NWA). They get to the island, and one of the pilots goes, "is that uh monkey?" which leads to Kong smashing a pineapple tree into the helicopter. Shit hits the fan, and it's a monsterfest! Sam Jackson loses his shit and goes, "it's time to get these mothafuckin monsters, off of this mothafucking island!!" Sam Jackson then gets stomped into the ground, but not before setting off an alarm, which brings this film to the final conclusion... Mechani Kong!!!! They fight, Kong wins, happy ended. End credits roll... Then you see the bottom of the ocean, and a dead Mecha King Ghidorah, Godzilla's eye opens and turns blue for a second, then.... DUNNNN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!! The End. 1000/100. Go see it!

Disclaimer: I haven't actually seen the movie, or watched, or read, any reviews. Just in case no one figured it out by the end of the first sentence.

While I enjoy your enthusiasm, let's keep this thread to actual reviews on the movie and not spam like this, please.

Sucks that it won't be more and have something to say about our earthy climate like Godzilla did
