Plot details are being kept locked on a South Pacific island, but Chandler will play a scientist and father of Brown's character. The role makes him ostensibly the hero of the movie.

The first film in the franchise, directed by Gareth Edwards and released in 2014, earned $529.1 million worldwide.

Chandler, who won an Emmy and received multiple nominations for his role as Coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights, currently stars on Netflix’s Bloodline, for which he has received two Emmy noms for his role as John Rayburn. The actor was most recently seen in Manchester by the Sea with Casey Affleck.

Chandler was fielding multiple offers for feature gigs but opted for the Godzilla sequel, nabbing a seven-figure deal in the process, according to sources.

Funny enough i just saw King Kong 2005 the other day, he's a good actor... I'm glad Godzilla 2 is starting with such promising actor/actresses i hope it continues with further announcements.

When I first heard the news, I was a bit dismissive because I couldn't identify the fellow just from his name. Totally didn't realize he was in Kong or several others things I'm a fan of.

In all seriousness, though, Serizawa was a decent character. He was kind of the "voice of reason" and the only one who truly respected Godzilla from the beginning. It's a shame he was pushed to the background in the second half of the film.

As for a new female actress, I'd be down for Rebecca Ferguson. Her star is on the rise after Rogue Nation and talented to boot. She definitely sounds like the type of actor (or rather actress) they'd go after for a movie like this (and the types of names they pursued for the first movie): a fairly big name, up-and-coming actor/actress with some credentials on his/her side, but not a megastar (well, maybe Cranston).

I'd personally go for someone like Emily Blunt, Scarlett Johanson, or Emma Stone as the main actress
