I mean, Hedorah beat the crud out of Godzilla arguably more than any other monster. I found his design to be intimidating because he looks so misshapen.
Doesn't matter, if they use him they would either have to radically redesign him until all the Showa purists here meltdown and whine and moan about him being HINO and that they might as well have used an original creation and blah blah blah, and I just don't want to read all that. Or highly, highly, highly unlikely, but still a scary thought however slim, they stay true to that butt ugly and silly design, which would be a horrendous mistake because no way is the general audience going to take that seriously. Either way it's just not worth it to me.

There is no means in any conceivable reality to redeem that design, so therefore it's impossible to throw away such a chance to begin with. Can't throw away what doesn't exist. And you would be wasting your time trying to convince me otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the film Hedorah appears in, and I don't hate the character outside his design, and frankly it works in the Showa setting. But we don't live in the Showa era anymore, and that design has no place in a modern, big, CGI spectacle of a movie. Sometimes, things are best left in the past. Hedorah is best left to his own little piece of movie history.
Hedorah could absolutely work in another medium like an animated film, heck he appeared in a few animated segments in his debut. I just don't see how he cannot be brought back at all, for instance he reappeared in a cameo in Final Wars and technically POTM, so there's no way Toho is opposed to bringing him back.
"The Smog Monster" is a decently known Godzilla foe, and I'm pretty sure Hedorah is supposed to be ugly as hell. Yes, we don't live in the Showa Era anymore, neither does Toho, or Legendary and WB for that matter. Might not be worth it to you (and there's nothing wrong with that), but down the line it's possible he'll appear in the MV.

Why say we would be wasting our time trying to convince you otherwise? Kind of a silly thing to say on a forum that promotes discussion. Also, why are you calling out the "Showa purists"? I suppose I'm one but I genuinely enjoy aspects from all over the franchise.

I wasn't talking about animation, animation has very different aesthetics. And Final Wars and POTM only barely utilized him in cameo roles, I wouldn't really count those, but even if I did, that's Toho, not Legendary. Japanese audiences are different from the GA in western countries, Hedorah might be more a part of the larger popular culture there for all I know. Maybe they could get by on nostalgia enough to not bomb. But it would be one of the worst moves Legendary could do without heavily redesigning the character.

Decently known for mostly the wrong reasons, and still not that well known these days I'm guessing. As for ugly, there's different kinds of ugly. If he was scary ugly it could work, but with his design as it is, he's not. He's funny ugly, he's fugly. Maybe if they decide to do a totally not serious MV comedy movie he could work. Otherwise no. Legendary and WB would have to know they would lose money on that character unless they radically changed his appearance.

Not that silly, we all have things we prefer discussing. Hedorah just doesn't have my interest, so discussing him fluctuates between boring me and making me want to roll my eyes. I'd rather talk about more interesting kaiju. And I called out the Showa purists because they're the ones who would be dead set against changing his design, which you would need to do for a modern audience. And I mean really redesign him. He just can't work as is.

And as I said, I don't mind the movie or the design for the movie, because I can enjoy it for the period it was made in. But I can enjoy things and yet understand why they can't work today. I think a lot of fans believe everything they love can still find success today, but that's just not true. I absolutely love Godzilla vs Megalon for example, but Megalon is another character that couldn't work today without a updated design.

I think there’s somtheing wrong with you if you expect them to copy and paste a suit accurate Showa design into a MonsterVerse movie.

Like of course they’d update the design, what a silly thing to even say.

I got one. The Super-X3. That thing was a beast in Godzilla vs. Destroyah. I say make it an American super plane that's started off as a successful heavy bomber, but have many of them modified into gunships.

Already mentioned this in another thread but given this was around figured I'd post it here too.

Assuming what Dougherty stated was true. I'd also love to see a solo Rodan film set during Maya civilization where he was worshipped by the ancient Mayans as the death god Camazotz.

Yes, but the problem is unlike Godzilla or Ghidorah, you couldn't merely get away with a small update with CGI. There's virtually nothing visually about Hedorah that would work for a modern audience. What you have to do with Hedorah is a radical, possibly even complete redesign, and that's the big difference here. You can't just update a design that far removed from modern movie aesthetics, you scrap the outline and go back to the drawing board with "What should a pollution monster look like?" and go from there. And that's what the purists would go ape poo about, and that's not what I want to have to read.

The only way you could stay kind of true to the original design and not scrap it completely would be to really play up the "smog monster" thing, as in he's so covered in self made smog you never once get a real good look at his body.

I haven't been as active lately so I probably missed it. What did Dougherty say?
Edit: Never mind, just checked the Beyond 2020 thread.

All of the most iconic movie monsters together in the same universe for the first time since the Showa series- it would be a dream come true. I could see Monarch obtaining the remains of the original Creature during World War II and using it's DNA to create their own humanoid kaiju. This could even be the plot for a third 'stand alone' entry in the franchise, not just as the story of a Kong/Godzilla movie. I'd love to see that.
I still hope this happens.
