^One thing I'm curious about with GvK is how they scale them both. Not in terms of height/weight ratio, but their designs. Kong's design in Skull Island is modeled off of the '33 Kong, so he has a disproportionally large head to his body. (I love that they did that.) And Kong himself has a very unique, distinctive build and was very light on his feet. Godzilla's build was more, "If this animal could really exist, what would it actually look like -- and how would it move?"

Good point, yeah KSI Kong moved a bit to much like Hulk than a supergiant species!

Hope they make Kong look very adult, regarding his face and a bit acromegalic like this new figure...

I want Kong v Godzilla To Be like BvS but...y'know, better critically received. With Mothra filling the role of Wonder Woman and Ghidorah filling the role of Doomsday. Here's to hoping. :D

Calling It Now, GvKK, King Kong won't be an inch under 250 ft.

You know why they did that? Because WB owns the rights to the 1933 King.

The Wikipedia has a write up on it. Basically Kongs' rights are split three ways between WB, Universal and Merian C Cooper's Estate.

There's other complications too, with the novelization of the original film being in the public domain and therefore making Kong to some extent a public domain character. 41 Entertainment also included a disclaimer in their materials for the Kong: King of the Apes Netflix cartoon saying "King Kong is a trademark of 41 Entertainment in all forms of animation." Plus there's DeVito ArtWorks, which owns an entire media property based on a rewrite of the 1933 novelization through the cooperation of the Cooper estate.

Then there's other weird stuff with the individual films, with Universal actually holding the distribution rights for the original film outside of the U.S., and Toho holding rights to the films it produced within Japan. The 1976 remake is still distributed through Paramount, though they have collaborated with WB to release it in a double pack with the 1933 film. Last I checked Universal distributed King Kong Lives on DVD.

Ah. Well, it appears other folks have explained it well enough, so we're at least good in that regard.

Those films are owned by Studio Canal (which Universal is a majority owner of). They bought out Dino De Laurentis' film catalog back in the 1990s. Paramount only has home video rights to the 76 film.

I am well aware, which is why I said the 1976 remake was still distributed by Paramount, and that Universal themselves handled the home video release of King Kong Lives.

Warner Bros. also acted as the distributor for all three animated musical King Kong films. I'm more curious about The King Kong Show. Most of Rankin/Bass' pre-1974 TV library is owned by DreamWorks Classics, itself owned by Universal, however when some of the episodes of the series were released on DVD in 2005 they were released by Sony Wonder.

Just wanted to add one more thing. According to Randy Merritt (the Cooper estate's lawyer) the copyright action from the 1976 case in California (which awarded Coopers estate the rights they won via the "Cooper Judgment") could not have been brought to the state court in New York in the 1980s Nintendo trial because the federal court had jurisdiction over claims brought under the Federal Copyright act. This is which kept Cooper's estate out of that legal battle between Nintendo and Universal.

It's a shame the rights to the character are all over the place. Somehow new movies keep being made though!

Wat.

I know of the 1998 animated "Mighty Kong" musical... What other 2 animated musical King Kong movies are there?

Why does Kong get so many musical adaptations?

I have so many questions.
Don't try to be something else. Don't try to be less. Great things are going to happen in your life. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility.
