If Edwards doesn't come back, who should Direct Godzilla 2??
I guess you all have heard by now that Gareth Edwards has been hired by Disney to direct the Star Wars spinoff following Episode VII. The movie is being set for December 16, 2016, which by then the sequel should be arriving very soon. But now the chances are slim for him to return, unless the sequel comes out in 2018 or so, so who's in your mind to take over the director's chair?
I have Frank Darabont in mind, which was one of the writers of the film and is famous for making The Walking Dead and The Shawshank Redemption. Alternatives are Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes) and J.J. Abrams if he doesn't come back for Episode VIII.

Fans would hate this. I would love it.gzilla46 wrote:Quentin Tarantino. The guy's a BIG Godzilla fan.
It'll never happen, though. We're not going to see the franchise handed off to a director with that much non-traditional style while it's still a hot, Hollywood summer tentpole series.

Man, the idea of the next Godzilla coming out in 4 years is....bleh. I'll agree in you with Darabont.

Disagree completely re: Abrams. The action setpieces of the Godzilla franchise at their best have a sort of lumbering majesty to them. Everything Abrams does moves way too quickly.
In my opinion, of course.

Oh. What about the guy who directed Gravity? That got great reviews because of the sense of scale he did with that. I'm sure he could pull it off.

John Carpenter would be my dream pick. Pretty sure he would love to anyways:
He also made a Gorgo vs. Godzilla fan film."I've always been a big fan. I've seen all the 'Godzilla' movies, and I have just about every Godzilla toy ever made," and "I always thought he was great. He had these giant fins on his back that glowed when he breathes fire. It had fantastic music, one of the greatest scores of all time. And his roar -- what a great sound!"

Bring back Stanley Kubrick from the dead and make him direct Godzilla...
On a serious note I honestly just can't imagine anyone else other than Gareth to direct this movie.

apparently, according to this article, after the star wars spinoff, gareth will work on not one, but TWO SEQUELS for godzilla.

Re: If Edwards doesn't come back, who should Direct Godzilla
I'll just drop in part of my post from the franchise thread:
Obviously Edwards seems a given potential candidate, having directed the debut film. I think another easy contender would be del Toro. His schedule undoubtedly conflicts with it, but if he really is a major kaiju fan then he might do this instead of one of the other billion or so projects he wants to do.
I think Dawn of the Planet of the Apes this summer will give me better indication of whether or not Matt Reeves would make a good director of the series. Cloverfield is the only film of his I've seen, but I thought it was excellent. JJ Abrams is a great director, and although I wasn't a big fan of his M:I film, I really like all of his sci-fi films. Lastly, I could see The Wachowskis doing solid work, as unique as this would be from previous films they've done. How about Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity was fantastic) or the Russo brothers (did a great job balancing story and action in CAWS)?

If Edwards doesn't come back, I'd have to say James Cameron or Del Toro

Carpenter is basically retired these days isn't he?
I really want a director who's skilled at evoking emotion, both for humans and the kaiju. They shouldn't just be cool to look at.

Re: If Edwards doesn't come back, who should Direct Godzilla
I think Cuarón, Reeves, and del Toro have demonstrated their abilities and could give us more than just effects scenes.Godzilla 1995 wrote:Honestly, I'm not sure I'm good for any other director besides Edwards for this series. I don't want Godzilla to be turned into typical destruction porn, I want a genuinely good movie with action scenes that have impact and aren't just filler crap.
In fact, Cuarón's Gravity was one of the most emotional movies I saw last year, with del Toro's one of the most fun. And well, people complained Reeve's Cloverfield was too hidden with its monster so budget aside maybe he's more moment drive like Edwards.
