No one's overlooking anything, many just realize that it's a very strange idea and one that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Godzilla is a product that appeals to children and general audiences, an audience that you'd be alienating with an R rating.

But even the Showa films had some rather... Questionable things (blood, swearing and BOOBS in the Japanese version of Terror of Mechagodzilla).

Not enough to be considered for an R-rating, apparently.

Every country has different standards for what they find acceptable in movies and who can see it.

Yeah Japan can get away with their kids seeing some stuff that would never be allowed in a kids show in say the U.S.

James with boobs. Yeah. Or the one that caused seizures or the one where Ash had a revolver pointed point blank in the face. A quick Google search shows that a lot of episodes were skipped for one reason or another.

I also remember there was a lesbian couple in the Sailor Moon show but when it was brought here to the U.S. they changed it so the butch one was just a feminine guy.

No, she was still a chick. They were just changed to be cousins instead of a couple to explain their closeness.

Gundam Wing was excellent, but don't forget Outlaw Star! That was one of the best pure-action shows of the decade

I think I enjoyed the "Toonami Midnight Run" more than I've ever liked "Adult Swim".

I've cast my vote. I'd like a solid PG-13 rating. But let's examine the people who want which rating.

People who want PG: Probably want a more family friendly Godzilla movie. Not too serious in terms of tone, maybe some funny bits here and there.

People who want PG-13: Maybe some smart thinkers. Know what to expect from a film about destroying cities and friends and family getting hurt. Most people have chosen this. A PG-13 film is easiest to market to kids and adults.

People who want an R rating- Probably a bunch of idiots who want their Godzilla to be DARK and GRIM and overall stupid. "OHHH look, I bet you guys thought Godzilla was for kids but no! It's violent and look at how godzilla kills! Hey mom, don't leave! Godzilla's about to rape that schoolbus"

Even then you can have some pretty dark PG-13 films. Look at the Dark Knight.

An R-Rated Godzilla film will also never happen. No studio would be stupid enough to risk it.

And ironically, this is what True Godzilla does.

School bus raping included? What films are you watching?

And no. Even when we see scenes of Godzilla's destruction nothing has ever come close to deserving an R rating.

^Throw some children dying of radiation burns into a 21st century film and watch the MPAA start to twitch. While I agree that no Godzilla, including the original, merits a restricted rating as it stands, I that think if Honda was working today, his original vision of Godzilla would be more in line with an "R" mentality. He made a conscious effort to go as dark and violent as it took to get the themes across, and given the changing standards for violence in film, it's not hard to imagine the more graphic treatment that may have resulted today.

That being said, I voted for PG-13. We can be pretty sure that Legendary's film will not be a allegorical war film designed to horrify its audience. If it doesn't have the intellectual weight to merit the brutal treatment, then I have no interest in seeing a Godzilla film that's senselessly grisly.
