Who Are M.U.T.O.?

I feel like they are going to be kinda in a grey area of neither good nor evil. I feel like they are a conglomerate of scientists or something experimenting with genes and radiation and either create, or want to capture the monsters. I would not be surprised if they are the ones who want a monster island sort of place to be created.

Most certainly the case. But additionally, there appears to be hints that the sinkholes contain eggs. Perhaps they are part of a cavern system?

Over a year ago I said I hoped Godzilla's origin was tied to 54. That certain powers that be would know of his existence. I believe this M.U.T.O. group is that organization.
Researching not only the 54 event but also other cryptozoological anomalies.
Just speculating on the origin.

I believe MUTO is both a UN-affiliated group and the American designation for monsters (the Japanese designation is kaiju). I also believe that a MUTO is not an insect-like monster, but could be any monster, be it original or Toho; judging by pictures of holes as part of viral marketing, there's a good chance Baragon or Megalon might in this movie. Of course, it could be a newly-made monster capable of burrowing.
