Come on, those films aren't big films like Godzilla. Most of those hardly had a audience at all. Most people go by opening weekend to total domestic multiplier, Godzille did a 2.16. That's very low. Godzilla is in the top ten percentile of the slowest to reach $200M.
Sadly, I must make you aware that anything I say is my opinion.

Contrary to popular belief, I did like Godzilla 2014

Entertainment Weekly declared GODZILLA 2014 one of the year's/summer's big winners not just in terms of money, but it rebooted successfully, the franchise in a big way. I agree!!!!!
Out of curiosity where did Entertainment Weekly say this? I reference two ET articles on 2014 box office back on pages 194 and 195 of this thread. The first ET articles stated the following about Godzilla-

"I build you a Godzilla movie that critics actually like (!) and less people show up than those who lined up for Roland Emmerich’s 1998 debacle?!"

And the second article had this to say about Godzilla-

"So what if, when you adjust for inflation, 2014’s Godzilla didn’t really outperform 1998’s Godzilla (and may have actually underperformed)?"

It leads to a boxofficemojo article showing G98 having a higher adjusted box office than G14:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises ... dzilla.htm

Seems that both want to compare G14 and G98.

Link broken there, bud.

But don't bring up inflation anymore, no one accepts it as a legit argument.

How is inflation not a legit argument? Its the one actual thing we can determine with absolute certainty.

You first, then Xeno.
The correction is for Xeno. Not you. You're fine.
LOL. you must not come in here much. We've had debate with much more furor than this.

Now, moving on. The whole inflation discussion is interesting because there's multiple factors that are taken into account for both films, with GINO's stain hurting G14, and GINO having a bunch of Godzilla-hype in the 90's beforehand, as well as a massive marketing campaign. There's a lot of factors to be taken in, and simple put, we don't know for sure.
Really? That's bait? I don't see how someone could be baited by that but ok.

Some of them are big; Harry Potter and X-Men, for example.

And if we go by opening weekend to total domestic gross Godzilla is still #429. Hardly unprecedented.

So it looks like we have our final list of top five markets for Godzilla outside of the domestic market. Of course Japan's run isn't quite over but the film has closed everywhere else and Japan won't get to half of China's total. Still kind of nice to see Japan be such a crucially successful market for a Hollywood Godzilla film.

Update: Japan numbers are through September 7th.

China: $77,630,000 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... la2012.htm
Japan: $29,930,046 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... la2012.htm (though August 31)
United Kingdom: $28,924,010 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... la2012.htm
Mexico: $16,479,339 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... la2012.htm
Russia/CIS: $15,123,140 http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... la2012.htm

I think we're 2 weeks away from finishing up in Japan and being able to close this thread until the release of the sequel. Everyone exausted their stance on the box-office performance and there's really no reason to keep rehashing the same things.

Looking at other movies' grosses in Mexico, it did fairly well in comparison. It was no Transformers 4 ($33 million) or Planet of the Apes ($24), but on par with Guardians of the Galaxy ($18) and Ninja Turtles ($16).

Did we get any updated numbers from Japan? The $29,213,727 number was through August, but nothing since then.

PLEASE GET TO $30M!

Updated to the 7th: at $29,930,046
So it'll be over $30m by now.

Hmm. Will it even be in Japanese theaters through this next weekend? A good run either way.

Here's something that I find odd, and I'm not sure if anybody can give an answer, but Fox distributed Godzilla in Malaysia and Sweden. I wonder why. Maybe they have a monopoly on the theaters in those countries? :eh:

So I'm guessing it either has closed now in Japan or will within the next week.

Numbers update?

Is Japan literally that last place it's playing?
"HAY ANGUIRUS"
"WHADDA WANT?"
"SUMPTIN FUNNEH GOIN ON, YOU BETTAH CHECK!"
"OKAY"
