Will Godzilla fans consider this the 29th Godzilla movie?

For the discussion of the upcoming Godzilla film by Legendary Pictures.

If you like it, will it count?

Postby Showa Gyaos » Fri Sep 10, 2010 4:37 pm

The topic is vague, but I'm referring to the vast number of people who say that TriStar's GODZILLA doesn't count as a bona fide Godzilla movie, either because of the monster's design, or that it hasn't the traditional atmosphere the series has. However, if Legendary Pictures perfectly executes Godzilla, both in design and style, will you consider the movie to be a true Godzilla movie?

Oh it will count just as much as GINO counts, regardless of what anyone feels about it.

That said, it will exist in it's own sub category of Godzilla movies: American releases. It obviously won't be listed as part of Toho's Godzilla series.

If it looks like Godzilla, Acts like Godzilla, Sounds like Godzilla then it is Godzilla to me anyways.

I always see post's on youtube going on about ''This is the American Godzilla'' like it's suppose to differ from the Japanese Godzilla. Maybe in a sense it is suppose to (in minor detail) but i always figured the only difference's was 1 was CGI an the other was a man in a suit.. One had a 15$ million dallar budget the other had 150$ million.
Otherwise it's all really the same....

So yes i will consider it a True Godzilla movie if it lives up to it.

And one is made in Japan by Toho themselves as part of their ongoing Godzilla series and the other...isn't. There are more differences just just budget and effects techniques.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.
Also... what constitutes a 'true' Godzilla film?

For me it will. I know it's American and everything, but if it's a good movie that gets the character right (in looks and behavior) I'll gladly call it Godzilla.

Well, I would to be honest. It's like saying Abrams's Star Trek film does not count as an outing for the franchise. There will be fans who deny its existance, but hey thats nothing new.

Toho is a company, however. It's not a consistent creative team which comes together to build these movies. After how mishandled Godzilla has been after the end of the Heisei series, I'd be quite happy to trade Toho's recent trend in Godzilla for another and take my chances.

I consider it separate as a result of Zilla being spun off as a separate monster. Therefore, it's a Zilla movie, not a Godzilla movie as far as I'm concerned.

It's going to have some form of Godzilla in it, so yes. It'll count as a Godzilla movie, bad or good.

Frankly, I vote nay. In my opinion, only Toho can really do it completely right, and even if it's downright incredible, this would really just be a very high-budget fan film. If Toho incorporates it into the timeline of one of their films, as an actual attack by Godzilla, then I'd accept it as canon. If and only if.

Yes? Well, when in your opinion was the last time that Toho got anything right with Godzilla? We all have our opinions, but I don't believe that Toho has tried or treated Godzilla with respect since Godzilla vs. Destroyer. GMK, which has alot of potential, was ruined by Toho's refusal to grant time, bravery (as it really should have been Anguirus and Varan) and resources to have it done properly, and that is the only film of the last fifteen years which even threatened to be good. Toho has treated Godzilla as absolutely nothing more than a business since the Heisei series ended, and I have absolutely no faith in their desire or ability to make a respectable (or respectful) Godzilla film in the foreseeable future. It's a Godsend that someone who might actually care is having a shot at it, and if the result is good, I'll gladly except it before anything else we've been presented with recently.

I can see your point, and while I disagree on some aspects, now that I think about it, the Millennium series wasn't so great. I still enjoy most of the movies, but I can see what you mean. (You know, it actually kind of bugs me that we've gotten no real political commentary since GvsKG.) Perhaps Toho should license Godzilla and various other monsters to a smaller company that really cares about Godzilla a lot, pay for some of the budget, then let them produce it and have Toho distribute it.
Or just give the people making it more control. Kaneko could have made an even better movie without Toho's interference.
