Re: Talkback: Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
I was six when this film came out in theaters, but I don't remember seeing it until some time later on DVD.
As for nostalgic charm, I never really got that from this film. I get that feeling from the Showa films I saw as a kid and even a few Heisei films I watched a lot when I was younger, but never this film. It's a decently mediocre film, it just doesn't really stand out that much, even compared to the similarly generic Tokyo S.O.S.

See, what's weird is that I LOVED every Heisei film when they first came out, even Space Godzilla. I really liked GxM as well, and loved GMK and the Kiryu films. But G2K...it's a film that was just there. I just don't care for it.

I watched the Blu Ray the other day. Ya..... Found myself fast forwarding through most the movie. It's pretty boring.

I find it odd how Germany got the Japanese cut when there's the oft-repeated story that Toho liked the US version so much that it became proper export cut.

Aw c'mon, I just wanted to see a rant about this film on par with your Heisei rant, that's all.Legion1979 wrote:Sure I could, but messing with you is funny too.tymon wrote: You can do better than that, Legion.

Both. The American version is tighter and moves along better. But still boring.Kaiser wrote:Which version if I might ask?Godzilla21 wrote:I watched the Blu Ray the other day. Ya..... Found myself fast forwarding through most the movie. It's pretty boring.

Re: Talkback: Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
I enjoyed it. It wasn't the worst movie in the series, but it wasn't the best, and I'm totally fine with that. It was the pacing and how some bits of the script were poorly translated that puts it in the "Fair" category for me. I loved the MireGoji, well, truthfully, it was more of a relief when seeing this Godzilla after the travesty of the '98 Zilla. Seeing the other Gojis after the MireGoji, I wasn't too impressed; the SokogekiGoji's (GMK) overall design wasn't all that intimidating...with the exception of the head and eyes. The KiryuGoji attempted to go back to the jagged look of the MireGoji, but it just didn't have that same aesthetic in my eyes. FinalGoji attempted to close the designs with a hybrid of the late Heisei and the Mire/KiryuGojis, but it didn't have that same appearance of weight as the MireGoji did.

My favorite Godzilla movie of all time. All the comments about how "hurr hah, mmm, yez, borint" it is grind my gears, especially since half the people saying it don't have reasons.

I don't think it's a terrible movie at all. But I also don't think it's all that exciting or notable either. Not getting how it could possibly be someone's all time favorite.

1: Suit design is cool. Like, really cool. Like, my favorite-design-of-all-time cool.Legion1979 wrote:I don't think it's a terrible movie at all. But I also don't think it's all that exciting or notable either. Not getting how it could possibly be someone's all time favorite.
2: Opening sequence is one of my top three favorite scenes in the whole Godzilla franchise.
3: Had aliens that WEREN'T japanese men with chrome jumpsuits, toilet-seat ascots, and visors.
4: In fact, the whole premise of the aliens being a collective of data without a given physical form is very cool.
5: Godzilla actually fights instead of standing around like a dumbass ala vs Kiryu.
6: The three main characters are actually likeable, when they aren't being shitheads.
7: Shinota is a gloriously bastardlicious villain.
8: Some of the least corny fight-scenes of any Godzilla movie outside of 2014 and a few others.
9: Orga is a wonderfully creepy and creepily wonderful kaiju in design and execution.
10: Dat final scene tho......

this sort of cheesey "all aliens must look human" idea the past had of what an alien would be like is part of the charm, though. best scene ever is when the lead alien is whipping the others in MG (this might be ToMG). it's hilarious and totally creates imaginary sado-masochist subtext.Vatarian wrote:3: Had aliens that WEREN'T japanese men with chrome jumpsuits, toilet-seat ascots, and visors.Legion1979 wrote:I don't think it's a terrible movie at all. Well, I'm glad you see it as charming. I, unfortunately, just sit there gritting my teeth at the cheesiness and waiting for the Godzilla part to come back on.three wrote:this sort of cheesey "all aliens must look human" idea the past had of what an alien would be like is part of the charm, though. best scene ever is when the lead alien is whipping the others in MG (this might be ToMG). it's hilarious and totally creates imaginary sado-masochist subtext.Vatarian wrote:3: Had aliens that WEREN'T japanese men with chrome jumpsuits, toilet-seat ascots, and visors.Legion1979 wrote:I don't think it's a terrible movie at all. Re: Talkback: Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
Shinoda is the main protagonist, you know. Katagiri is the "villain" who honestly feels completely unnecessary to the narrative to me so I never got all that worked up over him. I like that the film tries to do more with the human angle but so much of what they do either feels half-assed or doesn't work, so its a strength as much as it is a weakness.Vatarian wrote:7: Shinota is a gloriously bastardlicious villain.Legion1979 wrote:I don't think it's a terrible movie at all. Re: Talkback: Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
I liked it more than 1998 Godzilla but it wasn't quite the bang I expected. Since I've heard the Japanese version had slower pace and a bit duller, even Toho liked the US cut more I think I'll end up agreeing once I see the Japanese version. I did enjoy it more on re-watch but yeah nothing great nothing horrible. Orga should have appeared sooner and given a shorter opening tussle with Godzilla.
