That's an insult if I ever heard one. I wouldn't say it's that bad, but it does seem more tv movie than movie.

I picture it being more like a direct-to-DVD movie.

Yeah that's harsh, the action scenes save it from being such a thing, the final battle's too epic.

Wait, people consider this a bottom tier Godzilla film? I was thoroughly entertained by it. Lots of Godzilla screentime, good cast of characters supported by a good backstory, and an awesome monster for Godzilla to fight. Also Godzilla ends up perfecting the Rob Van Dam Frog Splash. The only complaints I have are the poor CGI effects and the silly black hole plot. Overall a very fun film to watch.

Aside from the lack of fleshed out story for some of the other cast members, and the kid being pretty much pointless, what was wrong with the characters?

This is honestly like saying, aside from the whole Holocaust and War thing what's wrong with Hitler.

You're asiding the problems in question

So those problems are the only issues with the cast? It wasn't intended to be an "ignore these negatives and the characters are good" statement, it was more like a "what are the other problems I overlooked" kind of question.

This movie is downright awful. Criminally boring, horribly paced, no memorable characters, inconsistent SPFX. The only redeeming factors, IMO, are the score and Megaguirus herself. I honestly think it's one of the worst Godzilla films.

I'm going to have to agree with Arrow. The film is nearly 2 hours, which is entirely too long. The SPX are very inconsistent, much like the 70's films..but this film doesn't have anywhere near the charm that those do (IMO, and don't even get me started on the characters. Some good things are the music, and Megaguirus herself, who is pretty BA in her own right.Who ever would have thought Toho would bring back the Meganulon, much less the queen of the species. She's a cool monster stuck in a bad movie. Ironically, Battra suffers from the same problem.

Uh, the film is 1 hour and 46 minutes long which is a minute less than G2K and only four minutes longer than most of the Heisei series. The running series at the time was always near the 2 hour mark till Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla and SOS, then we moved on to an excruciating actual two hours of Final Wars.

"Uh", I'm well aware how long the Heisei films are, which is just one of the many issue with them. GODZILLA 2000 is a little too long as well, but it's actually better than MEGAGUIRUS in some respects, and has more interesting characters.

85-95 minutes is a perfectly acceptable length of time for a Godzilla film. Most of the Showa films have that running time. RETURN OF GODZILLA and BIOLLANTE are the only two that I don't mind being the length they are because they're actual good, quality entries in the franchise.
