Not really. While a specific monster in the movie is definitely going to make me more interested in it without a plot..than it has nothing and that's why the Heisei movies fail because they don't have a good plot.

And the monster fights were cool, and good effects for a Godzilla film. Overall, I think this is a solid entry to the franchise.
That's just certainly not true, most of the Showa films I watch solely for the characters and plot.

Lightning has a tendency to hit really tall things. Granted, Godzilla might not have been the tallest thing in the immediate vicinity in that scene, but it sort of makes a little sense. Mostly I think they just thought it was a cool shot.

From a lighting stand point, it makes a dramatic silouette shot.

Me and my Dad watched the movie yesterday I must say we really enjoyed it.
One awesome thing was the sound design on the Blu-Ray IT. WAS. AWESOME!!! it felt epic. every little crash, every roar, every beam pop pop sound effect, the crackling it just sounded so awesome.

Anyone else feel like the characters are kinda flat in this one? They have personality but not much outside of their stereotype

Re: Talkback: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
I felt they actually had a little more depth than your average Godzilla movie. They definitely grew throughout the course of the picture due to their relationship with Kiryu. The lead managed to get over the death she accidentally caused at the beginning of the film by piloting Kiryu, the girl overcame the death of her mother via her relationship with the lead, and the scientist... well he didn't do anything. But he still had some character to him in that he was the awkward but brilliant geek dealing with being a single father.Godzillian wrote:Anyone else feel like the characters are kinda flat in this one? One-thousand-percent. I honestly find them somewhat unbearable - as you said, they're all hardly anything more than stereotypes. The 'dark', troubled girl, the clumsy romantic, the typical teasing bully, etc.... it's a prime example of the Millennium series' knack for poor character writing (almost Anime-esuqe in it's portrayals).Godzillian wrote:Anyone else feel like the characters are kinda flat in this one? I suppose there was some development here and there, but to me, they most remained static and uninteresting.

YES! YES I DO! It's why I've only watched the two movies ONCE. I cannot bring myself to re-watch them after all these years. Godzilla as well, felt completely flat. He had no personality. He just felt like an obstacle for the characters.Godzillian wrote:Anyone else feel like the characters are kinda flat in this one? They have personality but not much outside of their stereotype
Maybe when I'm old I'll re-watch them.

There is a Movie Monster Series figure of the suit, but it (and it's '03 counterpart) is 9", not 6".Godzillafan11 wrote:Is there a 6Inch Bandai Figure of this suit out for Sale ?Mechagigan wrote:KiryuGoji;Godzillafan11 wrote:What suit was used?

Re: Talkback: Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
I don't think the characters are necessarily outstanding achievements in screenwriting, but I found them a hell of a lot more entertaining than most of the other Millennium series characters. I found Akane in particular a good deal more engaging than the other Millennium female leads - Yuki from Godzilla 2000 was likable but unremarkable, as was Yuri from GMK, and Kiriko (GxM), Azusa (TSOS) and Miyuki (FW) were pretty unmemorable. I think she's given a lot more development than the rest of them, and I don't necessarily know how I'd rate Yumiko Shaku's acting chops compared to the others given that she had better material to work with, but she did a pretty good job playing Akane, good enough to make up for a couple of off moments from Yuhara and his daughter.

You can tell the characters have arcs, because they flatly state them in expository dialogue!
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
