Monster Discussion: Godzilla (2001/GMK)

About to start this in a few minutes....

85% of what I hear are GREAT opinions of it, so I'm looking forward -

Now this is completely open to debate, which I want, and your opinion is yours.

I rank GMK as my favorite Big G movie after the original (can't beat it ). This is mainly due to the portrayal of Godzilla. I consider this one of the greatest performances of Godzilla to date. He's big, looks scary almost, and his power is almost unmatched! The scene in which he anihalates the military in less than 15 seconds is stunning and is embedded in my head. Plus, he has the best shot of him rising from the bay.

Now, in your opinion, do you agree? If not, which do you prefer and why?

We had a topic exactly like this on the old forum. As I recall, it didn't end well. Topics discussing how powerful a monster is never end well.

As for GMK Godzilla's strength, he's average for a Godzilla. The only reason it looked like he did so much damage was because he was fighting weak monsters. His beam might be powerful, but it takes far too long to charge in order to effective. Without charging the beam, it has no staying power. The main thing that makes him weaker then most Godzilla's, is that he has no means of regeneration. Every Godzilla, except for '54 Godzilla, has super regenerative powers, and can heal just about any wound in seconds. GMK Godzilla couldn't heal a simple shoulder wound over the course of the final act of the film.

So no, I wouldn't say GMK Godzilla is the most powerful Godzilla. That would still go to Heisei Godzilla.

Thank you for your opinion. I'm sure it never ends well . I am aware that they weakened the Guardians. Although I would say that the Heisei is average as well. Ah well, to each his own.

Be warned though, some take this matter very seriously. It's as if though the power of the monster was proportional to their pride.

But to answer the question, GMK's Godzilla is the most powerful incarnation of the character.

And thus SS4g showed why there will never be a truly "Ultimate Godzilla" officially, cause a lot of film makers have claimed their Godzilla was the strongest and Toho would back them up as long as theirs was the latest, then when a new version is made support that guy's claims that his is the strongest.

I think that burning Godzilla, and FW Godzilla are much worthier choices than GMK but that's just me.

The fanbase in general tends to lean to Burning though not much good it will do him since he's gonna die. He could have destroyed Destroyah if he didn't run away. Even if the G-Force didn't kill it he would have died of a meltdown long before he got the chance to find him again and finish what they started

Well, its a good job the military actually killed a monster for once or we would all be screwed then wouldn't we? Destroyahs one tough ************.

Oh I'm by no means saying it was a bad thing, it was nice that mankind actually got a victory against a monster for once. And a super monster equal to or stronger then normal Godzilla no less! Nice bonus. But even if they failed Junior as an adult would have probably tracked him down and finish the fight but yeah the G-Force killed him before he could spread the death to outside of Japan.

Bravo G-Force. It's just sad for Godzilla who as far as he knew died thinking his son's killer was killed before he could finish what is easily his most personal fight at his hands. Before Junior's death Destroyah was just another asshole as far as he was concerned, after Junior being attacked Destroyah became the bane of his existence.

Actually, that idea about Junior killing him woulda been kind of poetic. But this will go on and on so, back on topic. Thank you for your opinion.

I agree with you. His atomic breath was the most destructive and portrayed the best in this movie. My hope is that the people doing the new movie look to GMK to see how it is done right.

I also want to mention some of the cinematography. GMK made him look big again for the first time in a while, G2K did that too a bit.

I honestly didn't feel any "power" from GMK's ray. I think the beams looked and "felt" their best in the 80's and 90's when they were still using retroscoping instead of computers, but that's just me.
