I just see it as a modern version of Ghidrah.
But hey, different stokes for different folks.

At least to give Indy 4 some credit, they didn't just retcon the whole thing by making Indy himself as some Alien agent sent to earth to investigate human history through archeology.

I thought it was pretty hilarious that the old man said that no modern weapon could kill Godzilla, and in the end, Godzilla was killed with that drill missile thing after the Guardian Monsters had all died off.

Anyway, I agree with your point about Godzilla's opponents being underpowered, especially Ghidorah. On the other hand. Baragon has never been especially powerful, and Mothra's adult form tends to always get killed easily anyway.

But as for why this is one of my favorite Godzilla movies, I just like everything about it (except the ending). The Sokogeki Goji is my favorite Godzilla design, even if it does have a beer gut. As far as the story goes, I'm not sure many people watch Godzilla for the story. A lot of people probably just want to see the monsters fight. But this movie had more of a story than most Godzilla movies. At the end of the day, it's the monsters I'm paying the most attention to, as opposed to the human characters.

Well it was Godzilla tiring to use his atomic breath and in coming out of the wound that blew him up. Plus the wound was caused by Ghidorah not the military. They simply exploited it.

As for this movie I just love they way Godzilla is portrayed.

Godzilla shows a savage side that hasn't been seen lately. This Godzilla targeted people, and he was brutal with his opponents. We have a beast like the Godzilla seen in Gojira and G Raids Again.

As for the sound track, I don't always pay attention to it unless the music is good. However, GMK has a good plot and characters to go along with the monsters and their fights.

One thing that always bugged me about this one is that when the military commander is telling his daughter and her friend the story of Godzillas attack and his experience with it they play the roar for the heisei Godzilla instead of the original roar. That always bugged me idk why haha

I like how it felt like a horror movie. I like how Godzilla was the villain again. I like how even though G was the villain he still kicked everyone's ass. I didn't like how G died.

i think it has to do with better effects. the plot is as strained as anything else in the franchise, so i dunno about the story being entertaining.for once the monsters and plot work hand in hand (really, really fluidly) and the pace is nice.

so designs, pace, and plot. they get people raving, but i'm not seeing what is so great about this film.

Well, it did a good job in the box office, and some American critics gave it strong marks.

I thought the opening was great with the viewer seeing Godzilla's blue spikes underwater. Really impressive

I think it is modified, actually; it sounds slightly more echo-y and faster than any of the Heisei roars I remember. Then again, I really only remember the 84-89 roars, since the others are just....bleh. Too quiet sounding for a massive animal. :/ This Goji has the excuse of just being a shell, at least.

I love KG's sounds, though, they really fit the character the film goes with. The other two are either meh (Mothra) or just eh (Baragon).

Not to mention it's the best kaiju battle of the last thirty years. I can't think of any fight in the Heisei/Millennium eras that's as exciting, well-shot, well-paced or well-choreographed as this one.

It's definitely one of the best. I think the only ones I prefer more are Godzilla vs. the UFO in G2K and Godzilla vs. the MUTOs in G'14.

^Yeah, those two are definitely up there, as well as the final battle in the US cut of Godzilla 2000.

I've always been a sucker for the night long fight in Tokyo SOS, but yeah, the Baragon one was gorgeous.

I think this film got a lot of hype and praise because Kaneko was fresh and hot right off the heels of the Gamera films (I won't even go into nor mention the name of certain former G-Fan / Japanese Giants writer who also happened to be good friends with Kaneko and helped in hyping of the film during that time, but I digress), and the thought of Baragon appearing...then the film came out, and it was like "um.....meh :? ", but a lot us (myself included, I'm afraid) were in denial about it. Also, I remember G-Fan editor JD Lee's extremely odd (and at times assinine) agenda he had against both this film and Kaneko, leading a lot of us to defend it and as a result, cutting it a lot of slack and over looking some of its faults. It also followed two very lackluster films, Kawakita's terrible Mothra trilogy, and an awful Hollywood film, so GMK seemed like Citizen Kane at the time. But the glimmer has eroded little by little over the years.

Despite my loathing of GMK Ghidorah and total disagreement of Kaneko's interpretation of Godzilla as "pure evil", I really liked a lot about the film, such as the wonderful Baragon battle and the Godzilla vs Jets in the mountains sequences....but as time goes on, I like this film less and less each time I view it....

For me, it's the only film of the millennium series that isn't bland (all 3 Tezuka films), mediocre (G2K), or just straight up awful (GFW, but arguably so bad it's good). It felt like they actually cared about making a good movie instead of being content to just go through the motions and rely on formula like the previous 2 films and the 2 films after it, and I think succeeded in doing so (even though it still wasn't as good as it could have been and doesn't quite reach the heights of Kaneko's Gamera trilogy), unlike GFW. It also helps that it's the first film in a while to use Godzilla as an allegory to make a statement about something, in the vein of the original Godzilla. If it wasn't for GMK, I would write off the entire Millennium era as a failure.

I first saw it on a VHS copy from a store owner who used to sell Anime and models and stuff, and I didn't know what to think of it when I first saw it other than being wowed and weirded out by Godzilla's old school design. That was maybe early 2002 and then I didn't think of the movie again until 2004 and then I got it on disc as my Godzilla taste was awakening again. I've since seen it several times.

I think a lot of people like it because a lot of it is good spectacle. Kaneko knows how to shoot giant monsters. One person I showed it to said "when I was a kid, that's how I pictured Godzilla being". There is nothing in this world that will satisfy everyone though, some people just don't click with stuff.
