I agree with this.

Speaking as someone who witnessed fan's initial reactions to GFW upon it's release in 2004, the opinions have drastically changed already. Initial reactions, for the most part, were very positive and most fans loved the film. Eight years later, the majority opinion is that the film is pretty bad. I doubt that another 30 years will change that.

We love the Showa series because they had good movies. Even the bad ones like All Monsters Attack and Megalon are much better films then Final Wars.

Good point about G revenge, but nostalgia can turn even bad movies into fond memories. The Giant Claw is 50s schlock, but it has a warm place in some people's hearts, including mine. If the Godzilla franchise continues to lack in quality, then the millenium films could become a fond memory as the last few attempts at quality.

The film had twice the budget of a normal Godzilla film and was twice the failure - IMO. This was supposed to be Toho's last Godzilla film. It was supposed to be awesome! It was terrible!

Films like Godzilla's Revenge and Godzilla vs Megalon were low risk. Extremely low budgets and expectations. Although I thought they did a wonderful job promoting Megalon back in the day.

People don't like All Monsters Attack because it's just stock footage during most of the film. The movie is enjoyable to watch if you view it as a stand alone movie. Not to mention at least AMA is shorter to watch then Final Wars.

I don't hate All Monsters Attack because of the stock footage. I understand why they did it. I don't like it, because the film feels lazy and downright stupid. Mostly because of the characters and how badly incorporated the monster segments of the film are. Not to mention it really fails at being a good children's film, when the only reason that children would watch the film is because of Godzilla, and everything good about Godzilla in the film comes from other films (and of course the film saying screw it's moral at the end, which is something you need to stick to in a children's film).

All Monsters Attack isn't the absolute worst Godzilla film, but it's one of the worst.

I never did get the ending of that film. The whole moral was established....then it went out the window.

The art direction in GFW was terrible. There were three conflicting styles - Toho Monsters vs Matrix vs Alien. The music was crap. The way the film was shot and edited was below par as well. It was like watching a cheap, poor Japanese Sci-Fi TV Show.

Hated the human element of the story. Big time overkill. Could care less about the characters. Not enough screen time for the monsters.

This film will never grow on me.

How? Ichiro is supposed to learn to stand up for himself and fight his own battles...and he does. :eh:

And then he caves in to what the bullies wanted him to do all along. So, in the end, the bullies still got what they wanted out of Ichiro. Bullies win.

Basically what GXG said. Ichiro stands up, great moral, then he decides to do what the bullies want. So in the end, the moral is that once you become strong enough to stand up to your enemies, you join them. This whole thing is warped now that I really think about it.

^Precisely. Playing a harmless prank on somebody is hardly immoral. Furthermore, he doesn't violently beat Gabara, just pushes him aside a little, shows he's a man.

Honking the horn of the motorcycle, which made the painter fall over and spill his paint, doesn't make it look like Ichiro was pulling a prank. It makes him look like he caved into the bullies demands, thus ruining the moral of the film.

If the creators wanted Ichiro to pull a prank at the end of the film, it really should have been something very different from what the bullies wanted him to do near the beginning of the film.

Except he didn't "cave" into anything. He had already proved himself a man before Gabara, and then pulled a "Look, not only I can push you aside but also do this one thing you don't dare", hence the military sounding music when he does that.

Yeah. This in a nutshell. All Ichiro was doing was proving that he finally grew some balls.

There are a lot of better ways to convey something like that. But by messing with the painter at the end just makes Ichiro look like a bully too, or that he forgot everything he learned over the course of the film.

Hell, he already proved that he grew balls when he stood up to Gabara and the robbers. So really, that entire bit at the end with the motorcycle was entirely pointless.
