Where would we be now?

Postby gatorzilla » Tue Apr 10, 2012 7:43 am

Browsing around I came across this article from SONY talking anout the G'98 film

"The goal is to not just sell the movie, but make the monster a retail franchise, like Warner's Batman or Paramount's Star Trek, that will generate sales for many years to come".

That is very interesting right there and yet sad at the same time. Where would our franchise be today had this movie been done right and been a huge success? Its sad to think how great things couldve been for us.

Thoughts?

The franchise probably would continue on into the future, with people talking about this film all the time.

But I don't necessarily think the film would be that good if done right. :|

Well had it really done well we probably would've received the second and third installments in the original idea for a trilogy, then maybe a new Toho series, bringing us to today.

Well, we probably wouldn't have gotten the Millennium series --- or, we WOULD get them, just later on, and perhaps better fleshed out.

We would undoubtedly have a sequel or trilogy, and maybe an American version of another Toho monster, like Rodan.

I think if G98 was a success, it would've fallen into flames sometime in the mid-2000's and just now have a reboot in production. Taking into account the time spent on the original film, I imagine sequels would've been released in two or three year intervals. I imagine something would've been done for the 50th Anniversary, either by Toho or Sony, and I think regardless if it was GFW, similar, or something different, that still would've been our delay until now.

What's really sad is they tried to make it catch on without really understanding, nor caring why it works.

We would have gotten them later on. Millennium was planed to start in 2004, not end there. But because of the failings of GINO Toho started early in 1999 to try and erase everyones memory of GINO and fix the damage. Ironically this move proved bad as most if not all the Millennium films are rushed and just so -so.

We might have gotten "a" Millenium series latter on, but we wouldn't have the Millenium series as we know it. Meaning, no G2K (which I know a lot of the younger generations of fans have a sentimental attachment to), no GMK (which was very good), and no Masaaki Tezuka's work, which could go either way. Though the thought of no GFW is nice...

We would have got Godzilla 2 in 2000 and maybe Godzilla 2 in 2002 or 2003. It depends if Roland Emmerich wanted to do sequels since he said that he never like doing sequels which is why he said no to Stargate 2.

I agree that unless the film was a HUGE success like the Transformers franchise there would never have been a sequel (Remeber although GODZILLA is disliked by most fans, including myself, it did make a profit, just not the hundreds of millions SONY was hoping for). Although a 2nd film could have bombed like "Wrath of the Titans" is doing now. No way that gets a 3rd installment, at least not theatrically.

2001-Godzilla 2
2004 Godzilla 3 (finish to the trilogy and Huge finale for G's 50th anniversary)

2005 (equivalent of Godzilla 2000)
2006 GXM
2007 GMK
2008 GXMG
2009 Tokyo SOS
2010 GFW

*note these are just place holder ideas. I realize based on the hypothetical success of the American franchise, any Japanese films would probably have been different. We would probably be in another Hiatus, just waiting for the 60th anniversary as we are now. Also I wonder if Godzilla:The Animated series would have had been renewed for additional episodes??

Was it ever set in stone as a trilogy? I know it was supposed to open into a new long-running series but I don't believe I've heard much about it being a trilogy specifically.

From what I remember reading that Sony sign a deal with Toho to produced three films depending how the first film will turn out?

The story for Godzilla 2 would give us a better film if Roland Emmerich didn't direct it. If he directed a sequel based on the GINO 2 story then I can't him making the movie any better then the first movie.

Honestly everything about GINO is a little sad. It was probably how I discovered disappointment as a kid.

I was under the impression that Stargate was intended to be a trilogy, or at least one seqeul was planned for the flick. There was even talk a few years back about finally making the planned sequel to the first flick a few years ago by Devlin and Emmerich. So I don't think Emmerich was all that opposed to doing sequels, and I could see him doing a sequel to G-98 . Especially, if the film was more successful.
