Also I meant to ask is your new name based off the brief mention of the metal?
Orichalcum is that fictional Atlantean metal right?
Yeah, but it's not something original to Gamera. I believe it was a big part of greek philosophy and alchemy.

It relates more to the idea the the atlanteans created Gyaos and Gamera as golems thematically.
Terasawa wrote:I don't think the lack of character development here is all that bad; that's not really a critical necessity in every movie anyway. The characters themselves aren't terrifically interesting but they're entertaining and they serve their purpose: to get us from one set piece to the next. It's done organically (tracking and trying to prevent the casualties caused by the monsters). So too is the exposition, which is disguised as unraveling the mysteries of the monsters' origin and connection.

IMO this is a top 5 tokusatsu movie.
You have a point, especially about the organically part. I still don't think it's a top five for me. I just don't think it does anything inventive or new for the genre. It's just a really well executed kaiju film.

I'm going to watch Legion tonight and Iris tomorrow so my opinions my change.

I think it definitely set a new bar for the genre in the Heisei era that was very rarely met, let alone topped.

Well one thing I do appreciate about the film, is that although the military has an important role in the film, it doesn't become the military mecha porn that the heisei nose-dives into and begins to rely on. It does feel very grounded, while at the same time being ridiculous.

Is it really that ridiculous though? I don't think it is, not any more so than something like Mothra vs. Godzilla is ridiculous for having tiny talking fairies and a mythical moth worshiped as a deity. All of Kaneko's and Kazunori Ito's collaborations do a terrific job of getting the audience to accept what we're seeing as reality in spite of how fantastic it really is.
