Kensho Yamashita

Postby Tyler » Sun Apr 24, 2011 9:24 am

Kensho Yamashita brought us the penultimate entry in the Heisei Godzilla series, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla in 1994. He's also directed two other movies, but like most other Godzilla directors his non-giant monster stuff will probably never be seen outside Japan.

Well, SpaceGodzilla is probably my least favourite Japanese Godzilla film. But it's not like I hate it. I don't hate any Godzilla movie. But it is pretty bad. It's like everything wrong with the '90s Godzilla films wrapped into one movie. I would like to see though the original version without the awful dub on the Sony double feature with Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I know it probably won't help much, but seeing these films how they were intended (credits and all) might feel like a different experience. Well almost.

Godzilla VS Spacegodzilla is a mess of a movie, plain and simple. It has plot lines that go nowhere, shoddy SPFX work, a cast of utterly uninteresting characters (save for Yuki, but his character type would be better developed in the Tezuka films), and some of the most sluggish pacing of any Heisei film.

I've never seen Yamashita's other directorial work either, but his filmography doesn't seem too interesting. Okay, scratch that, I am curious about Nineteen. SF Rock? Hmm...

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla was a pretty boring flick, the action was dull, the visuals where bad for it's time, the characters where lame, and the plot was a total mess. Not the worst movie ever, but it's worst then FW if you ask me. I would give the movie a 4/10 or 5/10.

Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla. Oh my god........save me -_- My least favorite Godzilla film of all shreonking time. This film is a huuuuuuuuge mess. Bad acting, bad effects, horrid pacing, bad writing, bad dubbing and sub-par music. I gotta admit though Spacegodzilla was a cool looking monster & so was Moguera but thats it. I'd take Godzilla Final Wars over this piece of dreck at least Final Wars is somewhat entertaining. Miki is even more annoying in this than she was in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1993) as she pleads with people to keep Godzilla alive. Little Godzilla made me wanna punch somebody. The worst effects scene in the whole film was in the Metor fight scene. Just plain awful. I just can't help but laugh at this film's stupidity it is very laughable. The only way you could enjoy this film is if you are drunk or just a glutton for punishment.

Not a fan, and easily one of the worst movies of all three series. The pacing is the first and perhaps biggest problem, followed closely by the boring "action" (read: beam spam wars). Moguera stabbing Spacegodzilla was like the only good bit of action. So even when you've waited for a while for any action, it's lame action. Nothing else was good, not even the music or characters. Spacegodzilla looks meh (crystal spines wtf), and Godzilla Junior looks lame (thankfully they fixed that next year).

Even GvMG II and GvM stand head and shoulders above GvSG.

Worst Godzilla film ever. Bad main plot, bad characters, bad pacing, bad Godzilla suit, too many sideplots that are never wrapped up...

The only redeemable points of this film are the score, Little Godzilla, and SpaceGodzilla.

I'll give the film the credit of having some nice editing for the big final battle sequence.

But overall, this is diffidently the Heisei eras token stinker. Just a big culmination of every mistake the Heisei series has done; from story, direction, monster design, effects work, etc.

As for the Director and his credit, his portions seemed disconnected from the monster action; like he was doing a totally different movie.

Oddly enough, that same suit was also used for Burning Godzilla. It's not great, but it's not as bad as Fatzilla from the year before.

SPACEGODZILLA is one of my least visited Godzilla films, along with MEGAGUIRUS and FINAL WARS. I've probably seen it a total of 3 or 4 times since 1995, actually. Most people have already covered why it's so bad, so I won't go there.

I've yet to meet anyone that "loves" this movie, though I'm sure they exist.

I havent watched this film in 15 years and I have no desire to watch it every again. I found it boring, with horrible dialogue, SPFX and that butt scene ...

Id rather watch GvsMBFTE. And Ive watched that more then GvsSG

That IS odd, cause the Meltdown Godzilla is my favorite suit.

Who knew?

If your defense, they don't really look anything alike. I too assumed it was a new suit. I didn't find out until years later that it was actually a modified Goji 94' suit.

It's interesting that you bring this up, because I was going to say something like that. Even as a giant monster flick, it approaches unwatchable (am I being over the top?). I only watch it if I'm in a "Godzilla" mood and I've watched basically everything else.

Megaguirus I'll watch a bit more because I like it better, but that's another one that I watch towards the end. Final Wars I watch more often than most, however.

Oh no, you're definitely right. It definitely borders on unwatchable for me, along with the other two films I mentioned. At least MEGAGUIRUS is kind of fun, in cheesy sort of way (not unlike some of the 70's films). SPACEGODZILLA just sort of plods along. It's just so...boring, and uneventful, on top of everything else that's bad about it.

Definitely the worst Heisei film. That said, I'd rather watch it over GINO, G2K, GxM and GFW.

Yamashita was definitely a poor director and the wrong choice for a Godzilla movie.

Just asking am i the only one here who liked Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla? I know its not in my top ten though but i found it quite decdent i mean it was better than Godzilla's revenge, Godzilla vs Mothra battle for earth and all of the millenium series except for final wars.

I did like the battle scenes and i though Space GOdzilla looked awsome.

Thats all i have to say

I still think Godzilla vs. Mothra was the least stellar Heisei flick.

No, It's really not.

Sparks galore! SpaceGodzilla would have been more appealing if he wasn't just a re-hased version of Super Godzilla.
