I don't think it's bland at all, it's one of my favorite Godzilla movies and I consider it one of the better Heisei films. Outside these forums, many other fans agree with me on that. I'm used to having to defend some of my unusual favorites like Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, but this is the first place I've seen a lot of fans throw MG2 in the "Heisei garbage pile" with Mothra and Space Godzilla.
I don't hate GVMG2, but I don't enjoy watching it very much, it is very mediocre and by the numbers. If I liked the human cast more I would probably rank higher, but they all fall a little flat for me. The plot is also very convoluted, kaiju appear and disappear as the plot requires (similar to GVM). The subplot with the Garuda and how it is considered a failure, and then modified to fit on MG to make SMG. The psychic plant song that seems to super charge kaiju when sung by esp youth choir. I also think Rodan is the worst looking Heisei kaiju, the concept look is fine. But it is one of the worst looking prop/suits in the entire franchise, any landing or take off scene is just laughably bad.

I sort of really like the plant song and how mysterious it is, and how it's never really explained. The song itself is also really creepy and strange.

Why not just post all this stuff in the thread I started geared towards saying positive things about the Heisei era.

Waking baby with it was okay. The Psychic choir that brings Rodan back to life, from thousands miles away. Gives him updated powers that's a little to far on the silly meter for me.

I like when Godzilla cracks open Destroyah's chest and he spurts and coughs up blood everywhere. Really gruesome moment and it's satisfying to see Godzilla hand him his ass in that moment.

Design-wise, I really have to say Heisei had really consistent design on the monsters and mecha throughout. It made the designs a bit less diverse, because you didn't have any huge leaps the way the Showa Era did between its Godzillas, outside of the whole life cycle of Baby/Little/Junior, but it really manages to kind of unify a bunch of movies that otherwise are fairly loosely connected. It helps too that in general I don't have a Heisei design I don't like- I can't point to anything from the era I think is a bad design, the way I can in Millenium or even yes, in Showa.

I do think that GvMGII is one of the better Heisei films.

I love Destoroyah's Perfect Design.

Battra is a cool concept... I guess?

I do like Mothra coming out of her cocoon.

Grand King Ghidorah is the best version of the character since 1964.

The first three Heisei films smack fire.
Godzilla's characterization in the Heisei films is awesome.
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 93 has some great fights and some good moments.

Battra, Heisei Mechagodzilla, Spacegodzilla and Destoroyah are badass.

Akira Ifukube's work is as good as ever.

There are a lot of emotional moments that could make a grown man like me cry.

There are plenty of good fights.

Little Godzilla is cute af.

Really ALL monster designs were great. Great soundtracks, great characters, great fights and great storylines.

A) I don't trust nostalgia
B) after the initial newness of the films (saw them age 10 to 12 when Sony brought 'am over) wore off I became pretty critical of them and still am.

... yet now I have a nostalgia for them! I guess they used to be so worshipped by fans I reacted extra negatively, but now that they're further back in the rearview they seem more inoffensive and not without charm.

Oddly, the derided Spacegodzilla has become a minor favorite, as it's more enjoyably bad instead of dull.

GvSG's reputation is pretty undeserved, IMO.

Clear motivation for Godzilla, great location footage (and way better color palette than the other '90s films), compelling human character in Yuki... lotta good things in there.

Of the two '90s Godzilla DPs I prefer the work of Masahiro Kishimoto (vs Mothra, vs SpaceGodzilla, and later shot GxM thru GxMG). I think GvSG represents his best work on the series; as you mentioned, the exotic island photography is terrific.

Godzilla emerging from Mt Fuji in Godzilla vs Mothra is done better than Mt Mihara in Godzilla vs Biollante.

Godzilla's Nuclear Pulse on King Ghidorah was a better effect than his Nuclear Pulse on Biollante's vine.

Second times the charm I guess, shame the rest of the Heisei era couldn't improve or even stay as consistent in quality as the first two entries.

The back lighting used on the kaiju is pretty cool. Adds a majesty.

The tendency for night battles in well lit cities offers for some nice visuals and keeps things looking epic but not obscured.
