Why Does Godzilla rely on his beam weapon so much?
I know the behind the scenes reasons why they used the "beam wars" so much in the heisei series. The suits were cumbersome and hard to move in, also apparently the filmmakers thought that melee combat in a kaiju film was cheesy.
Im talking from the angle of the story. Why does Godzilla rely on his beam so much in this series. Why doesn't he use more melee techniques to bring his opponents down. I mean he has teeth, claws and a tail. You would think he would learn to use those as well as his beam weapon

simple: it just happened to be his most powerful weapon. if you have a gun and a knife, and you cannot creep up on or ambush an opponent but must fight, which option do you choose?
the one that is most likely to win in the shortest amount of time, of course, which is the gun. Godzilla likely thinks the same way, not wanting to risk injury up close in combat and instead opting for a more relaxed and cautious approach.

If you were fighting a dude to the death, and you had a gun, why would you put it down to go punch him in the face?

Well he wanted an "in-universe" explanation, and in-universe Godzilla is not here for your amusementtymon wrote:^Exactly.

Eh, I look at it like most animals want to do the most damage without expanding much energy or being injured. Godzilla would be no different, his atomic breath is his most powerful weapon and if it fails to take out his enemy or he can't hit it.. He is given a better understanding as to what he is getting himself into.
Even with real fights with people, most men want to end the fight as quickly as possible. Get your opponent on the ground and basically end it. Nobody wants to show off, take hits giving there opponent an opportunity to gain an advantage.
So while Godzilla throwing down is awesome to see, i also can see why he'd rely on his atomic breath more often then not

It was a decison by Koichi Kawakita.
He felt that because of their size and weight, Kaiju won't do that well with hand-hand combat.

Well he should be, dammit!Black Lion wrote:Well he wanted an "in-universe" explanation, and in-universe Godzilla is not here for your amusementtymon wrote:^Exactly.
But yeah, this:
Perhaps some writers or members of the crew had certain in-universe ideas in mind so they could justify Kawakita's hard-on for bolk, but none of it comes across on screen, so any "answer" is just going to be fan conjecture.Legion1979 wrote:There IS no "story point of view". Re: Why Does Godzilla rely on his beam weapon so much?
Why does Godzilla have such a high dependence on firing his Atomic breath? It could be psychological. When he was a Godzillasaurus, Godzilla had no means of attacking opponents from afar, forced to rely on just his teeth, claws, and tail in combat. That all changed when the United States Navy not only humiliated him, they crippled him. Godzilla was as good as dead, until fate intervened in the form of the hydrogen bomb.
Not only did Godzilla mutate into a stronger body, he finally had the means of hitting enemies before they could hit him. That's why I think Godzilla spams his Atomic breath so much, because he still, in some way, feels like that helpless dinosaur that was left to die on Lagos Island.

For all the shit Kawakita gets for making the suits bulky, the Heisei suits are actually more realistically proportioned than any suits from the other eras. In order to hold up their weight they'd need disproportionally large hips and leg muscles.

He uses his atomic breath as his primary attack for the same reasons other predators use the most devastating attacks in their arsenal first. The quicker they can immobilize and incapacitate their prey the less chance there is that they will sustain injury themselves. So by attacking from a distance he does not sustain injury to himself but if he were to use his melee attacks it is very likely that his prey could inflict a mortal wound on Godzilla while defending themselves or their kin.
Sometimes you just have to look at the rest of the animal kingdom in order to understand a creatures behavior. Especially when it comes to creatures which are extinct or creatures that are not part of the zoological record

^Much like Mantids. Do they stop and slowly try to grab a cricket with it's mouth for food? NO. It uses it's best weapons, the great spiny scythes for grasping and its tremendous speed. Does a wasp try to bite you first or sting you? It stings first because of the venom it will inject. While it may not effect larger animals such as birds, it can still kill a caterpillar in a matter of minutes.
