When’s this hitting Netflix?
Yeah, Godzilla wins... sometimes. I mean, he was killed by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble-bath formula, heartburn, missiles, and poor box office returns, got his ass kicked by a drunken, circus-escaped gorilla, then he was beaten by two newborn worms, yeah some “king”.

That's some great timing...

"Hey...there is new Godzilla film coming out. Let's watch the old Godzilla film to get hyped!"

*Watches Film*

"Oh wow...that was terrible. I think I'll give that new one a miss now."

When it comes to collectibles there's always a market for anything related to any series no matter how poorly received the individual film is. You'd be surprised at how many people are often asking companies like NECA for figures based on the "worst" films in the series. There's been a demand for a figure of the "Jason" from Friday the 13th Part 5 for instance.

^ I agree. A nicely/super-articulated G98 is something I've wanted for years.

Anyways, ever since I've been reading David Kalat's book A Critical History and Filmography of Toho's Godzilla Series, I've had a new outlook for this film. Even though this film is entertaining garbage, I find the history and making of it very interesting. Toho wanting to expand Godzilla overseas because of the competition between foreign films and American-made films, the amount of effort Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin made to make a Godzilla movie that wasn't "campy" only to make a film that couldn't connect to the film's target audience, and how despite the few references to the original there were, the movie made no actual attempt to be a piece of cinematic storytelling by exploring the darker nuclear testing allegories and instead focuses more on humor that doesn't even work.

Major Godzilla 98 question.

When the fisherman catches something on his line is it actually Godzilla? Or does he catch a fish which runs out and then gets swallowed by Godzilla which then causes his fishing line to be pulled in?

How long is his line, in either case?

I think you've already considered this more than Devlin and Emmerich.

Hey guys just rewatched Godzilla 98.

I'll start with some positive things about this movie. I really enjoy seeing some practical effects being used for landmark buildings in New York being destroyed. The same thing in a movie today would always be done with CGI now so it's quite cool to go back and see them being done this way. Also the David Arnold score is actually really good.

We all know a lot of the bad things about this movie but ones that stand out is the concept of a 200ft tall lizard going to a heavily populated city like New York for the purpose of trying to hide. Matthew Broderick's character literally has a scene where he says Manhattan is the perfect place for a building sized dinosaur to hide. What the hell? You also have the part where Godzilla can outrun Military Helicopters but later on can't catch up with a Yellow Taxi.

Bizarre.

The taxi scene is such a step down from the previous action sequences in the film.

I don’t think anything past the first half of the movie was particularly good. The movie starts out decent enough but quickly turns to trash the second Godzilla reaches New York.

20 years have passed. It's offically NuhStalJuc again.
Mainly because it just hit Netflix, too.
The worst thing is the people acting like it's somehow superior to the current series solely out of a strange sense of nostalgia for it
I keep trying to like this film and it just blows, and I'm reminded of the comfy '90s kaijukino we lost when De Bont left the project and Sony tossed the Rossio/Elliot script.
It was my first Godzilla film so it's got that going for it, but that's about it
What sort of merch are they selling, anyway? Is new stuff being made, or is it just that the revived interest is seeing some of the old stuff changing hands again?
