Godzilla 1984 ending

Postby Godzilla165 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 4:54 pm

Why does it appear that some of the people are either sad, or guilty when Godzilla falls into the volcano?

P.S. Who else thinks that Godzilla's final roar in the U.S. version is out of place?

I like Godzilla's final roar in the film. I watched the Japanese version not too long ago. The scene felt empty without the roar.

And I think Raymond Burr's ending monologue actually gives us a reason why everyone is sad: Godzilla isn't evil, he's just an animal trying to live. Humans make his life difficult. And the characters are realizing that.

Some of the people feel sad because Godzilla isn't some evil creature, he is just a monster trying to survive in our world. No I don't think that Godzilla's final roar in the US cut is outta place because you hear his anguish when he falls into boiling lava

For the first question, I think it's as everyone else says: Godzilla wasn't evil, but rather trying to survive in the world. For question two, this is one of the only parts of G85 that I think is better than RoG. It heightens the sense of tragedy and loss and makes the ending that much more powerful.

^ Couldnt have said it better. The roar was definelty a good addition as well as the monologue.

I just watched this on Saturday. The roar at the end along with Burr's monologue is a great ending for the film. It really pacts and emotional kick. It would be missing something if it was not there.

Agreed, but it is in THE RETURN OF GODZILLA silly. :D

I'm just ragging ya man, I knew what you meant (I realize a lot people refer to the Japanese version as THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, since there are already two other films with the title GODZILLA). The scream actually is present in the international version (titled THE RETURN OF GODZILLA). The Japanese version is the only one of the three versions that doesn't have it.

Tamura has a theory that the mono mix of the Japanese version may include it (based on reports of people who saw it theatrically in Japan, and remember hearing the scream), though since the mono mix was never released on home video, there isn't anything to go by other than stories from people.

The ending in G85 is better than the Jap Version (although i havent watched it but hear a little).
The Monologue of Burr and Godzilla's Cry made it more tragic and sad.

I know for a fact that the scream was in the Japanese theatrical version and later removed for all of Toho's home video versions. The film's Drama LP is in full stereo and has it, so it was definitely in the stereo Japanese theatrical. I don't doubt that Toho made mono prints (in fact, somebody on CHFB who had seen a 16mm print of the Japanese version remembered hearing the scream, and 16mm can only contain mono sound), it just doesn't seem likely anymore that they made a unique mono mix with exclusive stuff, like the scream.

I rather liked the scream at the volcano fall. I'd sure as hell make that sound if my ass was being scorced by lava.

Cam, on Monday, I'm gonna mail you back your copy of the film. It seems that whatever cut you have has the roar in it. Its not as glorified as the American version, but there is one.

Obvious answers : Godzilla is an innocent animal, regardless of the damage he is has caused it is our creation, our monster, due to man's lack of responsibility of nuclear energy we made Godzilla into the monster he is today.

The Final scream is just heart-broken... Your seeing an already tortured creature now being dropped into a Volcano. You mean to tell me you wouldn't scream your lungs out if you knew you were about to fall into a pit of boiling hot lava.

The Final scream made the scene 10X more emotional, esp showing him slowly descending into the mouth of the Volcano. I find this film directly behind the Original 1954, but not by much at all.
