I can defend GFW. People may not agree with me but I can offer a reasonable and understandable defense.

In the appropriate topic.

I, that am rudely stamped, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph.

Where shall I place my review? It isn't technically a millennium film is it?

Maybe no one feels it's worth it. Counter arguing why Space Godzilla is a terrible film is just TOO easy.

Yeah, this is really yesterday's "been there, done that" news....and no amount of arguing/counter-arguing on either side is going to change anyone's minds about whether it's a good/bad film...

Liking any artistic endeavor is going to be subjective. I have learned that how I talk about my preferences and opinions is what is key.

For example, I can say "SpaceGodzilla is the best Godzilla movie of all time." But you see I am stating my opinion as if it were a universal fact and people can argue that point. However, if I were to say "I absolutely love SpaceGodzilla better than any other Godzilla movie!" then I am stating something that is only true for me and that isn't something anyone can argue about.

The problem isn't our opinions, it is when we state our opinions as if they were a fact for everyone.

That's enough from me, that is the trained therapist in me coming out. :)

Yeah, the title is pretty egotistical, but it's kind of a joke...just say it yourself out of context, you might laugh.
Before it can be filmed, drawn, acted or programed, it must be written.

So I treid watching this movie last night. Was watching all Heisei movies on crackle.
I have to admit I couldn't get though the first hour.
I had to turn it off and put in Matango.

Sry Gojira63 your essay was great and it made me give GvSG another try. I just couldn't make through.
Sit back and relax.

Why does it succeed where so many others fail?

It doesn't. GvsSG is one of those movies that even the filmmakers admit dropped the ball. Toho was the theatrical distributor of GAMERA: GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE (released a few months after GvsSG), and when they saw the final cut of that film they were embarrassed at how much it showed up their own movie. They even scrambled to rework the in-development DESTOROYAH so they would have another SPACEGODZILLA.

The movie was considered a disappointment by Toho, got poor reviews from critics and audiences, and to this day is widely viewed by fans as the worst film in the Heisei Series. That ain't a success.

That's true, but I almost pointed out GvsSG is widely seen as the worst film in the Heisei series. A movie has to be pretty bad to rank lower than GODZILLA AND MOTHRA.

This calls to mind a funny (to me, anyway) story. Between 2000-2006, the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood screened a lot of Japanese sci-fi films, including 22 different Godzilla movies. If a print could be found, they showed it. The one exception was GvsSG... Sony did have a 35mm print, but the film ranked at the bottom of everyone's lists of films to show (the general consensus was "it sucks") so it was passed over for other movies, year after year.

The other night while trying to watch this movie. I couldn't help but think to myself would I have accepted this movie more if it was a "made for TV" movie.

It just seems to me that all Heisei movies could've just been made for tv only. idk

^The 90's films, sure. The 80's films feel too cinematic to be made-for-TV.
