Besides, how can anyone defend GFW?

Tomorrow I will start a new thread with my review/defense of GFW.
Where shall I place my review? It isn't technically a millennium film is it?

Why does it succeed where so many others fail?

That's true, but I almost pointed out GvsSG is widely seen as the worst film in the Heisei series. A movie has to be pretty bad to rank lower than GODZILLA AND MOTHRA.
This calls to mind a funny (to me, anyway) story. Between 2000-2006, the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood screened a lot of Japanese sci-fi films, including 22 different Godzilla movies. If a print could be found, they showed it. The one exception was GvsSG... Sony did have a 35mm print, but the film ranked at the bottom of everyone's lists of films to show (the general consensus was "it sucks") so it was passed over for other movies, year after year.
