Worst VHS covers

Postby MaxRebo320 » Sun May 06, 2012 11:12 am

Often Toho films are known to have bad VHS covers, weather it's just bad artwork, has no relation to film, or is even the wrong film! What are some covers that you guys think are bad? Personally, this Italian ''Godzilla vs. Megalon'' VHS takes the cake:

Just....wow....

A dromeosaur, a shuttle, an alien landscape. It may not be accurate, but I want to see a movie that does justice to that cover art.

I'm sure it'd be miles better than Megalon, at least.

It's ironic how King Kong present on this cover, as he was originally going to appear in Ebirah. Does the company's logo remind anyone of Criterion's?

This early 90s Simitar Monster Zero cover is pretty laughable. Gotta love the egg-headed Xiliens, but where's Rodan?

The worst ones in my opinion are from Toho Video's 1991 series of tapes of the Showa era Godzilla films. Each one has a still from the movie with the subtitle "THE KING OF MONSTERS, THE RECORD OF GREAT BATTLES." above it and the movie's title under it, all set against a blue background. Bootleggers used to always utilize these covers. Anyway, I find them really boring and drab, the way they are so uniform in such an uninteresting way (I've said this before and I'll say it again: the best "uniform" approach to Showa Godzilla covers would be to utilize the beautiful theatrical pamphlets). There is sort of a rushed feel to them. But I do have some nostalgia for them, since it was through bootlegs with these covers that I was initially exposed to many Japanese versions. The back covers aren't bad, either (each features a collage of rare stills from each production).

Not quite Godzilla, but two German covers for ''Gamera vs. Barugon''.

Funny, because in Germany, GVB was called "Godzilla: The Dragon from the Jungle''.

You know, a movie with Godzilla, King Kong, AND Gorgo would be pretty cool.

Lol. I've never seen those Italian covers. Those are f'n hilarious.

That Simitar release of MONSTER ZERO was actually the first that I owned. It's awful. It was one of the only Godzilla tapes I had that had insane tracking issues. Even some of the other EP mode Godzilla tapes I had weren't that bad.

This one's pretty bad. Why is it always ''Megalon'' that gets the bad ones?

I would guess because, given it's supposed "public domain" status at the time, it could have been a combination of the fact so many companies were releasing it, and they probably didn't have much money literally invested in the film, only production. Whereas a number of other companies were releasing theirs legally, who probably figured they had a greater need to do their releases right. Though opion may vary, from case to case.

On that topic, I disagree with The H-Man and his post above, I thought that was a great DAM cover. It might not be perfect representations of the exact versions of the monster in that film, but it's still a great work of art. I still have the original promo poster they gave out at G-FEST '98.

I also don't think Simitar's original Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, posted above, is that bad either. It takes a bit of artistic license but still represents the film well. What I consider bad covers are the ones that blatantly misrepresent the content of the film, or are extremely vague about it.

^ Those Rodan and Anguirus designs would have been wonderful in a Heisei film.

That "King Kong vs. Gorgo" cover is amazing. It's interesting they decided to title it after the Red Bamboo, too.
