Japanese Toho VHS Releases - Letterboxed or not?

Postby Space Hunter M » Fri Mar 09, 2012 10:53 am

I'm not entirely familiar with 1980s/Early '90s Japanese video standards. My first question is: Was letterboxing of 'Scope (2.35:1) films common? Pan & Scan dominated the western video market until the late '90s, but was the Japanese industry any different? Just curious.

I only own bootlegged versions of the Toho tapes, but those are all presented with the correct aspect ratio.

I don't officially know but I think the Japanese treated their movies with a bit more respect and often featured them in the correct aspect ratio.

Did a bit of searching. Toho's official VHS release of King Kong vs. Godzilla on the main site says シネスコ ("CineScope") on the back of the case, so I guess you're both right.

I've never seen a pan-n-scan Japanese release of something. Even Toei's 1985 tape of YUSEI OJI (PRINCE OF SPACE) is full 2.35:1.

LATITUDE ZERO was shown in fullscreen on Japanese TV.

I forgot all about that site. They have cool sections on PROPHECIES OF NOSTRADAMUS and DAWN OF THE DEAD. The latter has some screenshots from a theater bootleg of the rare Japanese theatrical version.
