Toho movies that you wish were avalible in the U.S.

Postby rytheman » Mon Feb 27, 2012 12:49 pm

What Toho films do wish were readily available in the U.S. or abroad? For me, it would be The Siege of Fort Bismarck. I am obsessed with that film ever since I read about it in August Ragone's biography of Eiji Tsuburaya. There is only one measly clip of it on Youtube, and I can't find a bootleg or even a torrent of it. I wish someone like Criterion would put it out.

That is really a shame since the UK had some pretty nice VHS releases back in the day. The VHS releases were complete uncut international versions.

1. the full 114 minute cut of Prophecies of Nostradamus
2. Horror of the Wolf
3. All of Jun Fukuda's crime films
4. Princess from the Moon
5. Blue Christmas (aka Blood Type Blue)
6. The Invisible Man
7. Tsubuaraya's war movies
8. The Phoenix (Hi no tori)
9. Murder In The Doll House
10. Lake of Illusions
11. High Seas Hijack (original version)
12. Submersion of Japan (original version)

I know some of these films were released in subbed format to art house theaters, but I'm talking about a legit R1 release

Does anyone know if prints of unaltered international versions were shown in Australia during the Showa era? Daybills from that period seem to suggest that Aussie distributors did very little with the films. If this is true, then what stopped Madman from transferring any of these prints, assuming they still exist? What stopped them from doing their own transfers of the prints Toho has in storage?

The point is, I think it would have been far more interesting if Madman did their own transfers of English prints just like the earlier mentioned UK labels in the '90s, because Toho Video of Japan's inferior DVD transfers have literally been seen the world over and it would be stupendous to have some variety for once.

Toho probably. Only powerhouses like Sony or Criterion can afford to make better (proper) transfers of these films.

It's a good release, in my opinion. Definitely worth picking up, especially for under $15.

The 3 unreleased Godzilla films. The 3 Toho Films released by Brenco Pictures (now held by MGM). and The Three Treasures (aka Birth of Japan)
There has never been a "Scientifically Accurate" Dinosaur portrayed on any Television Show, Movie, or Documentary. Only what the human imagination can conceive, and I'm ok with that.

Yes to all of these (though I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with BLUE CHRISTMAS, LAKE OF ILLUSIONS, or HI NO TORI, but I'd like to know more about them). The only things I would add would be the Toho Dracula films, GORATH, THE HUMAN VAPOR, and THE LAST WAR.

Christ dude, have you ever heard of Google? Yahoo? Amazon.com? Wikipedia..? You could have used any of those to find out it's been on DVD for 5 years already.
