I wonder if that commentary will ever see the light of day. It was one of the main reasons I was looking forward to the release...

Yeah. If we're just looking at a subtitled DVD of the Japanese transfer playable on American machines, well... That's why we have bootlegs. If it were a Blu, it might be a different story. But another SD release... I'll pass.

Media Blasters' full post on the subject just for the record:
It has been announced a while ago but the bareones DVD of GvM is done and at replicators. Approved 100% by Toho and will be shipping in September to stores. There is no blu ray right now cause not approved by Toho yet but we do plan on doing one. The issues with the Godzilla stuff was an issue of us pushing too fast without Toho finishing approvals. We went overboard on the extras.

Someone asked if it had been pushed back from the August date and MB's poster corrected themself and said the August date is still on. So at least at this point they are still hoping to do a BRD, no doubt with at least some of the extras that the DVD/BRD 2011 release was originally supposed to have.

They say 8/11/2012. What they mean is 2/11/2028

QFT

I know they seemed apprehensive about doing a bare bones BRD and although I'd love extras I'd take a bare bones BRD over no BRD at all.

True, but for the sheer amount of stuff one can put on a Blu-Ray, a bare-bones release on that format is even more disappointing than a bare-bones DVD.

Same. Heck at this point (with MB's issues & all) a Godzilla vs Megalon DVD/Blu Ray with decent video quality with subtitles & the dub are all I ask for (even though it'd be nice to have extras on there)

I dont think youll even see a BRD/DVD of a Godzilla film.

I bet Toho didnt approve the DVD. I bet Toho wanted MORE $$$ for a BRD and MB couldnt afford it. Theyll gotta use that money to buy the rights to big boob anime, promote it then let the rights expire as they screw off for 8 months.

would have been funnier if you started that post with "DAM" instead of dang. Also prices are only going to go up unless MB does another pressing of these, which seems extremely unlikely at this point. I actually had two of these in my possesion. I sold the seond one for a slight profit, but that was back in decmber for only $25.00 when I paid $20 for it :( darn hindsight.

I paid $13.99 at Hastings. Well, $9.99 after I used $4.00 store credit.

And no, they don't have any more at that B&M store. Online, dunno.

Mine was pre-ordered off Amazon, but when I got it the case was badly cracked so I couldn't even think about reselling it for an outrageous price.

I'm a bit regretful for not getting the Blu-ray too though. Maybe I'll get another chance, as long as I have the special features on the DVD then I won't mind a boneless BD (unless the quality sucks compared to the last release.)

Just ordered the DESTROY ALL MONSTERS Blu-ray for $25 off Amazon, a good buy compared to some of the other prices out there.

The barebones DVD will do fine for me. I guess I'm not just as big of a fan of this franchise as the rest of you. I'm perfectly happy with barebones DVDs for these films. I even tolerate the DVDs of G vs KK and the Destroyah/Space double feature being dub only (but I draw the line at that one Tristar double feature that's pan and scan, that's a line too far). I have both the CM and Criterion versions of the first movie, but the rest I guess I can settle for "good enough".

I could bootleg or buying other region versions of the rest of the films, but I just don't care enough I guess.

I completely disagree with that line of thinking. If I "just didn't care" I would have bought one of those unlicensed DVDs a decade ago. Given that other studios passed on MEGALON because of all the unauthorized versions available, then the film being tied up for years due to bankruptcy, I for one am thrilled to finally get the a good transfer of the film in widescreen, uncut and with Japanese and English audio tracks.

Media Blasters certainly made their mistakes, and Toho can been very tough to deal with. That's two major factors preventing the extras-laden release many of us were hoping for, and it could easily take more than a year for Toho to give their final approval or rejection of the bonus features. So at this time, Media Blasters options were to wait that out (knowing that fans are complaining about delays) or go with what Toho has authorized (knowing that fans will complain). If I were in their shoes I'd probably make the same decision they did... and you know I'm someone who cares about this stuff.
