Which DVD's and Blue-rays should I get?

Postby Eunectes » Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:33 pm

I'm a die-hard Kaiju fan and with a few good marks my parents decided to get me some something something ya know?

Thinks in my cart on Amazon are:
The Godzilla Collection (the one with 7 showa movies and stuff)
Ultraman: The Complete Series - Susumu Kurobe; DVD
Gamera Trilogy in Blu-ray
and Gantz the Live Action movie

So what else should I get? I can't decide really because I all Godzilla movies except some Showa ones and I need that for sure just as well as the Ultraman Series and Gamera Trilogy. I mainly need affordable and worthwhile collector's movies and blu-rays aswell as Ultraman Movies sense I saw all Godzilla and Gamera movies except the ones listed in the collections above.

Get Sony's Icons of Sci-Fi set, which has Battle in Outer Space, The H-Man and the original Mothra.
I would also strongly recommend Media Blasters' Toho Pack set that has The Mysterians, Varan and Matango.

Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Wait three months and get the original Godzilla when it goes Criterion.

^^Seconded. Also, the Shout! Factory releases of the Showa Gamera films, Media Blasters' Gamera the Brave, the Icons set (as previously stated) and CM's double feature of Rodan and War of the Gargantuas are ones I'd highly recommend if you don't already have them.

That Classic Media Godzilla set is a must. Also include the Rodan-War Of Gargauntas double set DVD that CM also put out.

Stuff to definitively get:
All of Sony's DVD (or if you're patient their inevitable Blu-ray releases).
Media Blaster's releases of Varan, Matango, Atragon and The Mysterians.
Universal's release of King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Stuff to avoid:
Media Blaster's releases of Frankenstein vs. Baragon and Dogora.
Classic Media's releases of Godzilla and their Rodan/War of the Gargantuas double feature.
ADV's release of Destroy All Monsters.
Every film should have at least one animal attack.

Why avoid these? The only other way to get them is by going the R2 route, and I doubt they're getting re-released over here any time soon.

Because of their substandard video quality. Those who can't afford Toho's releases can still get the German DVDs. The release of a 2014 film with Godzilla's name in it might blossom the Kaiju blu-ray market just like GINO's release blossomed the Kaiju VHS market.

That's not a complete given.

And I do find it a little confusing that you recommend all of Sony's DVDs (even the full screen Heisei ones, or the ones with terrible dubtitles?) or even some of Classic Medias DVDs (which use iffy Toho prints and cut-and-paste American versions) but you're being choosy with which MB DVDs he should buy.

Buy 'em all and enjoy them I say!

I didn't recommend any of CM's discs in my post. ;) I'm choosy about any disc where the video quality is not up to snuff.

Heisei releases, it's very likely Sony was working exactly with the materials Toho gave them. Fullscreen or not, their transfers are far more impressive in terms of sharpness and color than Toho's own HDTVs. The dubtitles issue is again, Toho's doing.

I can't be hard on Dogora at all considering MB's release came out BEFORE Toho's did. Considering that, I'm surprised it was released at all.

Christ, DOGORA and FRANKENSTEIN VS. BARAGON aren't so awful that you should pass on them all together.

ADV's DAM disk? Absolutely. That's the worst licensed Toho DVD ever. Hell, it's one of the worst DVD's I've ever owned.

I didn't know there was anything seriously wrong with DOGORA... yes, the dub is sourced from tape, and the international credits are missing, but that's about it. It looks great.

If you're really into Godzilla (1954), you might want to wait until the Criterion set comes out. Not only it will look better than the Classic Media version, but also tons of extras not included in the Classic Media set and a restored King of the Monsters print.

The Godzilla Collection (the one with 7 showa movies and stuff)
Ultraman: The Complete Series - Susumu Kurobe; DVD
Gamera Trilogy in Blu-ray
Sony's Icons of Sci-Fi set
Media Blasters' Toho Pack

bought and done.

Good buy?

I would have held off on the Gamera trilogy until the sub issues for Gamera 3 are fixed but other than that sounds good.
