If classic media had the rights to ALL Godzilla/ Toho sci fi films? :P

No, actually. It wouldn't be.

I'd rather the movies be handled by a company who isn't just going to reuse Toho's R2 masters and re-create "American" versions.

I'd be nicer if CRITERION had the rights to the entire series.

Or at least G85. That's the only one that isn't set up for a DVD release.

Heh. Bootlegs are cool and all but I try to support companies that put out quality releases. If the existing releases of a film suck though, then yeah...

Biollante is? I thought that was just internet rumor talk, but I never know anything anyway.

Only one? Forgive my ignorance, but is Biollante scheduled now?

If it is, I'll consider eating some bricks.

Other then the classy presentation and some nice commentaries, there wasn't anything particularly special about the Classic Media DVDs.

Lets hope Criterion sub-licenses all of the films Classic Media has. Would Classic Media even release their own versions if that happened, and who in their right mind would buy the Classic media discs over Criterions?

Keith told me a while ago that he was in contact with Echo Bridge and they're currently looking for materials for a Biollante release, so that means one is on the way.

How long it will take is anybody's guess.

Why some people see Classic Media's releases as the best? I'd be really nice if Sony had the right to all the saga. No extras, no menues, etc. Just the films in beautiful color (except for the first 2) and really sharp HD. That I would love.

...and wouldn't it be nice to live together,
in the kind of world where we belong!

I'm a HUGE Beach Boys fan.

Anyway, while the Classic Media DVDs may have their share of problems, I appreciated the effort. It seemed like the people behind the DVDs actually cared, rather than quickly slapping together a release. And at the very least they provided some good commentaries and released the original Japanese versions of these movies without dubtitles (although I think they could only get away with that on ToMG). Considering the budget for producing these DVDs, I was satisfied.

Jeeze, now that that Criterion rumor started going around, people seems to think that Criterion would release any tokusatsu that came their way. In all honesty, Criterion would probably never release any tokusatsu other than Gojira, and that's because of it's masterpiece status.

And probably more than half of all Godzilla movies on DVD in North America would have dubtitles if Sony had them all.

And Sony's picture quality might look good on such releases as Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, but do you think that they would fork over the extra buck to restore movies like Gojira or Godzilla Raids Again? I think the reason those movies that Sony owns look so good is because Toho restored them, it was nothing of Sony's doing.

IIRC, Criterion wanted to release all the UPA Godzilla titles onto LD in the 1990s...

Not true. Sony put THE H-MAN, BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE and MOTHRA's Japanese and US versions through full-blown restorations. Toho has never restored any of their tokusatsu films. They believe the fans will buy their releases no matter what (which is why their DVDs and Blu-rays have spotty picture).

I know Toho has released a few movies in questionable quality (like King Kong vs. Godzilla), but generally their DVD picture quality is great. If you look at the picture quality for the movies Sony released, and then look at the releases Toho made, I don't think you would find a drop in quality (if you looked at some you may even find an improvement in picture quality on Toho's end, like with Tokyo SOS).

If Toho isn't restoring their films, then they are doing something to make their prints look so good.
