There wasn't any updates available. However, somehow I made it play (problem is now I don't know what I did, so when I do get time to watch it, I'll still have to figure out the problem).

I looked through both films and they look and sound really nice. I can't wait to watch these and check out their special features. I loved the package as well, despite having the wrong Godzilla on the inside. I'm very glad I got it, even if I did have a problem making it play.

In case if anyone is wondering how popular this product may be in Japan, a good indicator is to see how much one wants to pay for it.

http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b131916265

It's going for 1200 yen. A listing for Toho's blu-ray is at 5000 yen. Lets see how things play out. I mean, I am more than sure Japanese fans know of how great Criterion's products are.

I've been purchasing a lot of Criterions recently and they really need to improve the look of their subtitles. They can be really hard to make out at times.

The subtitles on the Blu-rays for Godzilla(1954) and House seemed fine to me.

Yeah, I mean, if you're watching the BD on an HD TV (like your supposed to), then you can see the subs just fine. Sure, they blend with the background ever so slightly on occasion, but the quality is so good that it's still not difficult to make them out. Unless, of course, your eyes are just jacked to shit.

Considering I am a cheap bum and rarely buy movies anymore, and having the Classic Media release being the first time I saw Gojira (1954), while half asleep, I noticed something on the Criterion DVD I didn't notice before...

The actors.... They're not looking at each other. They're looking past the person they're speaking to, and its PAINFULLY obvious in some scenes. It's almost like they're looking at cue cards.... huh...

Were you watching GKOTM or Godzilla(1954)? I'm gonna guess you mean KOTM.

Yeah, be must be talking about KOTM, because that's the only thing that makes sense. There is definitely nothing of the sort in the original film.

No, I mean 1954. Just look closely, REALLY closely, particularly in some scenes with Serizawa. I remember once scene SPECIFICALLY, the camera is to the side of Ogata and Emiko, and they're talking to each other, and Ogata turns his head to speak to Emiko, and it looks like they're facing each other, but the camera turns really quick, and for half of a second you can see they're not looking at it each other at all. You can just see where their eyes are looking, kinda weird.

A friend pointed it out while we were watching it, and I didn't notice it, but I skipped back a few seconds and after he said something, and it was REALLY obvious.

*insert comment about paying attention here*

I dont recall those scene's specifically, but it may be a cultural difference as well. In some cultures it may be a sign of aggression, or disrespect to lock eyes for too long, thus the apparant "looking past" or away from someone. Heck even I do this in my every day speech. for example if a female co-worker happens to wear a really low cut top, rather than making a big issue out of it, I just look indirectly at her when conversing.
There has never been a "Scientifically Accurate" Dinosaur portrayed on any Television Show, Movie, or Documentary. Only what the human imagination can conceive, and I'm ok with that.

Well, err, don't know if that would be legal, per se, but I will take a screen grab or two.

It's legal. It's called fair use.

If I may make a suggestion, try downloading VLC player. It's free software and IMHO is way better than most "built in" movie programs (and yes, it supports Bluray playback).

If you still have issues getting it to work, the problem may lie in your hardware. My old laptop used to decide it didn't feel like reading discs every now and again and I just had to deal with it (didn't want to spend the money to have somebody look at it and try to fix it).

I know of that, I just don't know if there is a specific time after a release where you cannot post ANYTHING unless you have permission.... Though, then again, it would be fine due to criticism.

I need to study for a midterm that I'm having today, and I have a BOATLOAD of homework tonight, and I work tomorrow.... I'll do my best to get some screen caps tonight and post them.

EDIT: Okay, after getting about two hours to myself (3/4 of that being napping), I finally had the chance to grab two shots to show you what I mean.

Painfully was a bit of an overstatement. Actually, a lot. I just noticed that this scene, in particular, looks a bit off.
Image
Yes, they are looking in each others' directions, but it looks to me as if Ogata and Emiko are looking over each others' shoulder.

This one here, too. Just a split second after their conversation.
Image
It just doesn't look like their head is placed where it should be. If you pay attention close this scene, it almost looks like Ogata's eyes can't stay focused on Emiko, and they constantly move like a news reporter's eyes reading a teleprompter. It isn't just this one, either. Right before these two go up the stairs to discuss what Serizawa discovered, right around 1:10:42, Emiko doesn't even cast a shadow on Ogata when she probably should.

I've only noticed this is in scenes where two or more actors are close together. And I know I'm not going crazy, because I didn't even notice it doesn't look like they're looking at each other until a friend pointed it out. The stills don't really do justice.

I just got my hands on the Criterion collection of Godzilla last night. All i can say is WOW, the image & audio quality is just fantastic, the bonus features are great, especially the interview with Haruo Nakajima. Most people complain about the Kiryu-goji suit being on the inside of the popup cover, but I'm not bothered by it. So overall it was worth buying the Greatest of all monster movies on Blu ray.
