I passed on the DVD since I already have the Classic Media release. The only Blu-Ray player I have is on my laptop, but Godzilla is worth it for me.

You know, I may just end up getting the Blu if the DVD impresses me enough. Then again, if the DVD is adequate, I'll probably hold off a while, but I'll definitely upgrade eventually.

The two films are windowboxed on the DVDs, just in case anyone's wondering.

Yeah, according to their site that's standard for Criterion.

As if Godzilla doesn't technically kill people in every movie.

Literally, my only problem with this release is the packaging. The slip cover is fine, but I'm just not a fan of the pop-up Godzilla, especially since I want so hard to slip the booklet into that fold-out section but can't because he's in the way.

That's pretty much standard policy for Criterion...

Very nice essay. I never knew much about the Kurosawa film, I thought it was interesting.

Okay, here is my review.

The movies have never looked better. This is probably how they looked back in the '50s. Kalat's commentaries for both films were very well done. They make good companions to the CM commentaries done by Ryfle and Godziszewski. Those were more technical going into the productions of each film, while here Kalat does more of an in depth analysis of the themes.

The featurette on the special effects was very eye opening for me. I had no idea how much of the environment was fabricated after the fact. The new subtitles on the Japanese version really do make a difference as the story seemed to flow much better than before, although they really should have been yellow as they were hard to see at times. Same with the interviews.

One more nag is the packaging. The interior case and art is a bit wonky. The menus and booklet/essay have a black and white look which better reflects the movies. I guess the Kiryu suit is Toho's go-to design for this kind of stuff as it is seen in the IDW comics too.

But overall you HAVE to get this and I hope Media Blasters manages to get Megalon out soon.
RIP Ray Harryhausen
