The US distribution rights to the Godzilla films are split up among too many different companies for the US to ever get a Final Box type of set, most likely. It doesn't help that there are so many of them. The only way we'd ever get it is through bootlegs.

Still, the rumored set that was mentioned sounds very nice. I'll assume it includes all the other G films Sony has the rights to, including GINO, which for the record are:
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
Son of Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Hedorah
Godzilla vs. Gigan
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mothra (Battle for Earth)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
GODZILLA
Godzilla 2000
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Godzilla: Tokyo SOS
Godzilla: Final Wars

That sounds like a great set. Along with CM's box set, one could pick up the vast majority of the series very easily.

I was actually referring to R2, I'm not sure how many Blu-Rays Toho has left to release before they do a boxset. But yeah, that would be awesome if a R1 company could one day get ALL the rights, and release definitive versions of the films with similar packaging, menus and features. Very, very unlikely though.

Sony could still make a kickass boxset, they would have to get better transfers for Heisei and the majority of the Millennium films to make it great though.

Give me a hologram disc of all the English versions of the Toho sci-fi and kaiju films, restored as nicely as the US versions in the ICONS collection, and I'll be all set.

No the set is was only going to include the Heisei films + RoM and G2K because GvsKG and GvsMothra 92 where released dubbed full screen only, GvsMGII-Destoroyah had their credits cut short, RoM1 and 2 where the same (credits cut short) RoMIII hasn't been released yet on home video over here and G2K is missing the Japanese version.

Didn't the Simitar DVDs come out in 1998?

Yes, that's why I wrote "1998".

True they wheren't officially licensed or maybe they where

? Simitar licensed them from UPA, who had the US rights to those films at that time. Classic Media later bought the UPA library which is why they now hold the video and TV rights.

gvamp wrote:Supposedly though there's that huge Godzilla set rumored to be coming out on DVD which will include all the Heisei films Sony has, RoM1-3 and G2K they'll all include the Japanese versions uncut though we probably won't see that until LP G comes out.

You've called this a rumor before but I've already explained that it's not. Back in 2009 I attended a private screening at Sony Studios for their restoration of MOTHRA. Before the movie I spoke with a number of Sony guys about their plans for a Godzilla/Toho FX DVD set that would include all the films Sony had only released English dubbed. The idea was to reissue all those films (plus REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 3) in their correct aspect ratios, uncut, and with both English and Japanese audio.

Now Sony discussing their ideas at a reception is not the same thing as Sony definitely planning to release that DVD set. But it is something they're thinking about. And since I was told that by Sony, it's certainly not a rumor.

But there's a tremendous difference between "something being considered" and a "rumor". The definition of rumor is "a story or information that is repeated but doesn't have a confirmed source"; but the information about the Sony's ideas for a Godzilla/Toho DVD set came from Sony employees like Mike Schlesinger and the guys in charge of putting together the TOHO COLLECTION. Since there's a known source, it does not qualify in any way as a rumor, and calling such is wrong.

Thanks for clearing up the Simitar release thing for me.

My pleasure!

Can't wait for my Toho Collection set to get here. Mothra is the only movie in the set that I've seen before.

You won't be disappointed, unless you want fancy menus and premium packaging. The menus are pretty basic: an option between the english or Japanese versions, and subtitle options. Then again, though, that's all the Classic Media discs have, save for the commentaries. The movies themselves have good picture and sound quality; not to mention they're pretty good movies, at least they are IMO.

The BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE and MOTHRA commentaries are really good. I don't know why nobody talks about them.

I didn't even realize there were commentaries on them. I didn't look at the specials or anything, I just went straight to the movies. The sad thing is, i've had this set for about three months. Thanks for telling me.
