The Hunter's Moon

Post by Beast Blood »

Odar, the All-Maker. Odar, the God of Balance. The being responsible for the ordering of Bjornskar. It was by his power that life could at all be sustained. It was by his will that the chaotic elements of nature existed in harmony with one another. And it was by his energy that certain nature spirits had greater existences as Aspects of Nature, the most vital cogs in the machine of balance.

Hraaldstag was the Aspect of the Hunt.

Every once in a while, the great hunter sought to test and challenge the denizens of the world he helped watch over. They lived in a harsh land and could not afford to grow complacent. They had to keep their survival skills sharp. They had to learn and be taught.

The time had come for the next Storjakt - where Hraaldstag brought interesting beings to test them in his realm of Jaktomrader. This time, the Hunter shifted his gaze to other worlds than simply Bjornskar. Whispers from the void between worlds captured his interest, drawing his attention to new individuals to test. In the few years after his last Storjakt, the Hunter had watched and chosen a handful of interesting morsels.

The first was a creature of a species reminiscent of the ones living on Bjornskar. Like the Bjornskaren, she had a rugged exterior, but a rather soft interior. She was a keen hunter. Hraaldstag wondered how well she would handle herself in a world so similar yet so different than her own.

The second was a warrior that reminded Hraaldstag of the staunch yak people living in the mountains of central and eastern Bjornskar. She had slain many lives, but had also saved many of them. Hraaldstag wondered if she recognized the consequences of her actions. Life, death, taking lives, preserving them - core concepts in the hunt. One could not take too many lives, but one could not save too many either. Hraaldstag thought her strength could be useful not only to herself, but also to beings new to his realm. Bjornskaren beasts were hardy and mighty, not to be taken lightly even by their own kin. For strangers, they were even more dangerous.

His third choice was one Hraaldstag knew few would understand without him explaining himself; a weak, crippled being barely capable of doing anything by herself. Where most would see uselessness, Hraaldstag saw potential. The girl had her smarts, and the Lord of the Hunt wanted her to use it to its full extent. Would she have the guile to think of strategies and the silver tongue to convince others to aid her?

The fourth creature was an example of what Hraaldstag saw as a species dangerous if left unchecked, a massive eel and its numerous children. It was to be an example of his teachings.

The fifth was a guardian of stone that Hraaldstag sought to keep in shape. Sleeping for too long brought weakness and sluggishness. Just as he saw to it that the bear Slumber had plenty of time awake, he would see to it that the statue-like warrior would not fade to irrelevance.

The sixth was a burly and strong individual who again reminded Hraaldstag of the Bjornskaren, were they smaller and lacked fur. Specifically, the man reminded of the Wildfolk, shapeshifters walking the fine line between sapience and sentience. He was a brave warrior and a skillful hunter, and Hraaldstag was impressed to see he had actually learned to control the beast inside of him. Rather than the man being tested, it was his own Wildfolk that Hraaldstag wished to test. What could they learn from the burly man?

The seventh was a clever creature that knew all too well the harsh realities of life and survival. He was an example of the strongest being the ones to survive, instantly catching the Lord of the Hunt’s interest. How far would this goblin go?

The eighth was a humongous serpent - a natural hunter. Hraaldstag was especially curious to see how she would react to the presence of other giants around her. Would she learn to coexist with them or react with aggression?

The ninth and tenth were two mighty creatures from Bjornskar - one that had been complaining a bit too loudly about being bored and another that loved to meet new challenges. Both fine choices to spice things up.

Before each and every one of them, a ghostly, glowing moosebear appeared with nary a sound. The red, ghostly figure raised a brawny arm, and the visions of the chosen faded as they were transported to the Realm of the Hunt, a voice echoing in their minds in a language they strangely could understand:

“Min jakt börjar.”

“My hunt begins.”

---

In the darkening blue of late afternoon, an ominous red moon hung there, still and silent. In the grassy plains below, a band of burly furred warriors returned home from a successful hunt. Three monstrous-looking stags were hauled on the shoulders of equally monstrous-looking warriors. Scraggly carrion birds soared above, occasionally harassing the moose-like creatures for a piece of their kills.

Their leader glanced up, finally noticing the fiery-colored moon. Its sight caused him to emit a grunt, turning to motion to his warriors to follow him closer as they continued on their way...

She woke up with a loud yawn, the massive black holes that were her eyes gazing on the massive rocks that blocked her from the outside world. Odd. She could've swore this wasn't the place she had mysteriously fallen into..

Her blue scales shifted as she began to slither around the area, using her tongue to smell the air. Lifting up her head, an odd feeling surrounded her. She wasn't the only one here, that was the only thing truly certain. Opening the massive maw that revealed the three rows of teeth, her orange throat began to glow as she aimed it at the sky.

The ground blew open as the massive stream of fire erupted from it, and a hissing sound came from below. Loki's massive daughter had reawoken. Jormungandr: the world serpent herself.

The Stone Giant was slow to wake. For centuries he had lain in the ocean's cold embrace, waiting for the time when the world should need him again. His rest had been almost akin to death, so peaceful had it been... until the call. A call to join the Hunt. Gigarma had no intreast in such a thing at first. He had no need to hunt and for him to do so would be nothing but barbarous. Then the thought entered the deity's mind, "Others will answer the call. Others who would hunt and slay, make the innocent suffer". That was something he would not allow to go unopposed.

When Gigarma awoke he was still underwater, but it was far brighter than the abyssal depths he had sunken to long ago. He lay on his back, looking up at a wall of ice. So who ever had called to him had also seen fit to move him, presumptuous but for the best. There was not time to waste. The Stone Giant began to move. The Heart of Fire burned with renewed vigour in his breast. The earthen parts that made up his body slid against eachother as joints, long idol, began to work. The still waters became filled with violent currents as Gigarma raised up towards the surface of the frozen lake.

The ice broke apart effortlessly befor his rising form. He noble, horned head rouse up into the sky, while waterfalls cascaded down is gigantic frame. Gigarma, The Lord of Storms, had returned to the surface once more.

"By the divine ones!"

Ramia struggled to keep her horse under control. The great grey stallion flailed and thrashed on its hind legs in a maddened frenzy. Yet as Ramia rubbed her hand against the head of the giant equine, she couldn't fault her horse. She herself was rather perplexed and shocked by this turn of events. One moment she had beaten back some lowly bandits who had picked the wrong knight to attack, and the next.. She tried to remember exactly what had happened, but it was all like a blur to her.

And now, now she was in a completely unknown area. The towering pine trees, the soft snow, the frosty dunes that peaked in the horizon, the rolling curtain of clouds above... none of this was anything she was familiar with. And this unfamiliarity was driving Raiban mad.

"Relax, Raiban. Please relax... It's fine, just a small hiccup. We'll be okay, I promise."

Her words finally had the desired effect, and the horse lowered back onto all fours. Ramia let out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness that had ended. Yet... where exactly was this? This wasn't the path home, or to Auntie Mara's house. Nor was this anywhere near the capital.

"Oh great Artos, please protect me and guide me through these shadow lands, and drive off any evil that assails me."

A voice cried in the distance. It was a girl's voice, one panicked and scared. Someone was in trouble, and even in this foreign land, she couldn't turn a blind eye. Perhaps it was a native who knew where exactly this was, or someone else like her, dropped into this strange place. Either way, she knew what she had to do.

With a tug of the reins, Raiban began to gallop through the snow toward the source of the cries for help, and into the growing blizzard...

A fur-clad man arose from within a pile of deep, bone-chilling snow. Winds howled around him, scattering snowflakes and thin shards of blistering ice through the air. The roar of the boreal winds filled the air, deafening in its cries through the cold moonlit sky. The figure huffed, dusting the layer of snow that covered his furry clothing and his coarse, curly beard.

Grasping the base of his twin-headed axe's head, The figure pushed himself completely free from the snow mound he found himself within. Moving swiftly across the frozen landscape, he moved to a nearby ice-covered hill, hoping to get a better vantage point to see his surroundings. Surveying the area proved difficult; the howling winds kicked up a deadly whiteout, making it difficult to make out much beyond his arm's length. wherever he had ended up, it was certainly far from the others he had come to know.

Sliding down the side of the hill, Vulfrad quickly got to work making shelter. Finding a small tree nearby, he quickly got to work, chopping off a few of its limbs and setting up a campfire. He would need to move quickly to avoid the cold...
_______________________________
Cursing under his breath, a different figure, this one with yellow-brown skin and clad in a set of simple clothes, pulled himself up out of a massive sinkhole he had been unfortunate enough to fall into upon his summoning. He quickly reached down and brought up his absurdly large backpack, filled to the brim with all sorts of magic items and survival tools.

"Glorious," The figure muttered, producing a small flask before taking a swig from it, "just when I was on the verge of a new discovery. 'oh, but it won't be ready until tomorrow!' they said. Bastards..." He turned to look towards a nearby stone, as if blaming it for his situation. "All they had to do was work a little faster! That's it, and I'd have those precious artifacts in my grasp! Ungrateful shits don't even know how much I provide for them!"

Collecting a ball of snow in his hands, the goblin-like entity hurled it at the rock. "Good thing I'm always prepared..." The goblinoid produced a set of flint and steel, along with a bundle of twigs. "A good thief has a tool for every situation. Even if it involves being in the middle of nowhere."

As Ramia cut through the raging snowstorm, nearby, another figure on horseback did the same. The steed was not quite as gargantuan as Raiban, only eight feet at the withers- though this was still bigger than even the largest Clydesdale- but the rider was more than two heads taller than the woman warrior. Instead of heavy, knightly armor, the figure wore a thin tunic and simple cloak, the latter of which flapped violently in the icy wind. They did not seem fazed by the brutal cold however.

Perhaps it was their fur.

Rather than human, the second rider was some form of beast woman, her head fanged and wolf-like. Her hairy brow sat low over her small, reddish eyes, not only to guard from the snow-laced wind, but in thought. She was not sure how she arrived here. The climate, even some of the geography, was familiar, but this was not Noraage, that much was obvious to her. The stars were wrong. More than that, the smell was wrong. The air had a different quality to it, lacked a thing that would be difficult for her to explain to a human, or any creature without the ability to see as well with its nose and its eyes.

Something strange had happened while she slept.

She had dreamed of a strange, radiant creature. She did not know what it was. Her only guess was a member of the reirvenir, one of the primordial races: the starry beasts whose pelts now made up the night sky above Noraage. She could not know though. No one but the old gods knew what the reirvenir had looked like, for they had all been slain in the primordial wars. When she woke from that dream, she was no longer in the snowy camp she had fallen asleep in, but on a different world of ice and evergreens.

Was this still a dream? Would she unexpected wake from this too?

She supposed only time would tell.

In the meantime, she could busy herself by investigating the nearby screaming. She spurred on her steed somewhat grudgingly though.

The shouts, they sounded maor...

Gigarma raised his right leg free of the water and placed on the snow covered bank. The sound of his footfall boomed through the air, while the ground shook violently from the impact. As he rouse out of the lake the last of the ice feel from his expertly carved form.

Now free of the frozen lake, the Stone Giant took in his surroundings. He did this, not only with his eyes, but also his spirit. This was indeed not his world, though it reminded him of his long destroyed Hyperborea. The cold wilderness were akin to the untamed parts of his homeland, but the energies that flowed through it were alien to him. Not evil, but strange... different.

Gigarma wondered if he would be able control the elements of of this world as he did his own. A vital question, for if he could not, his prowess in battle would be diminished. After closer examination of his immediate surroundings, he decided on a simple test first. A single tree.

Not far from the lake was the edge of a great forest. Among the front rank of the trees was an ancient and withering pine. Gigarm reaches out his left hand towards the old tree. As he did so his stone eyes began to glow with divine light. In an instant the pine changed from withered log to a health tree in it’s prime. This pleased the Lord of Storms, who proceeded to test his powers further. In a matter of seconds, and with the violent sounds of shifting earth and falling wood, the pine had now grown from a simple tree to a towering behemoth rivalling Gigarma’s own height.

Slithering out of the cavern, Jormungandr began to look around. Snow, snow, and more snow. Not that she minded it, but it was still somewhat uncanny to know that what felt like a moment ago all she could remember being around a fire filled blaze, but now she's in nothing but snow and ice? How much time had passed? Was she even in the same place at all?

She could sense someone, or something at least, getting somewhat closer. But it would depend on how they reacted to her in order to figure out the other way around. If friendly enough, she could at least accept them in her presence. If a foe, she shall so no mercy...

The howling cries rivaling those of the cold winds reached the band of moose-like warriors. Their leader stopped in his tracks, ear twitching as he turned his antlered head towards the direction of the piercing noise.

It seemed the Prey had already arrived.

"Rorn... Kovar... Go find the poor wretch before the Sabers do," the large male said. The two Olgfolk in question nodded, heading out towards the source of the screams.

The cries for help came from a lone tree in the middle of a clearing. The tree was surrounded by large muscular wolf like creatures that circled and snarled at a hole in the trunk of the tree.

It was from within that trunk, just barely audible over the snarling and barking of the wolves, that the cry for help came from. And that was what Ramia saw as she entered the clearing.

She held her right hand out, and a large lance, almost twice as long as she was tall, formed in her grip. Whoever it was that was trapped, they needed her help. And thankfully, help had arrived for them.

With a loud shout, she ordered her horse to charge forward, and her stallion raced forward. The wolf like creatures raised their heads at the sudden noise, but that was all the time Ramia needed as Raiban closed the distance. Her lance stabbed into the nearest beast and ran it through from shoulder to shoulder. It died in that moment, as its spine had been severed from that one strike...

One down, five to go.

Ramia clenched her teeth and stood ready, brow lowered and teeth gritted as the Worg surrounded her. Some snapped their jaws to snatch nothing but the bleak air, feigning bites to intimidate their prey. They were enraged by the sight of their slain packmate, slobber falling from their slavering jaws and gleaming fangs. Ramia steadied her lance, leveling it at the chest of one of the carnivorous beasts. Her horse reared back.

The Worgs suddenly darted away.

Raiban's hooves hit the snow hard, a resounding thud shaking the pines above. But the feeling of dread still lingered. The woman slowly looked over her shoulder...

And beheld the sight of a massive wolf-like beast soundlessly regarding her from only a half-dozen meters away. In the commotion, she had not even heard the sound of his steps. How long had he even been standing there, watching her?

Red eyes shifted from her to the fallen Worg and back again. Whatever emotion he felt, whether it be sorrow or anger, at the sight of the killed Worg, the beast did not show it.

He stood calmly, silently, merely watching.

The ground formed new trails as she slowly moved past the trees. Her dark pattern had made her rather hard to spot with the tall ones looming over her. Howls..wolf howls. She felt like she's heard something like that before from someone. If only her memories had come with her to this land.

The wold beasts came out of the forest, ready for an attack that was cut short by an incredible rate. Unhinging her jaw, Jormungandr had just swallowed them completely while others nearby ran off. Huh, turns out the prey here is rather tasty!

As the lupine giant observed Ramia, studying her closely with its cold, crimson eyes, an arrow- a massive arrow, over three feet long head to nock- passed over its snout, breaking its line of sight.

A warning shot.

Perpendicular to the huge beast, another wolf-like head emerged from the blizzard, but this one was attached to a humanoid body, a body atop a huge horse with scarlet fetlocks. In its clawed hands, it held a massive bow, ever longer than it was tall, and a man-sized axe bounced against the simple saddle it sat on.

The unarmored horse and rider charged into the clearing, coming to a halt between the beast and Ramia. While one of her paws held her bow tight, the other stretched behind the towering beast-woman and pointed to the echoing tree hollow. The message was clear.

Help them. I'll hold off the beast.

The enormous Worg did not flinch at the threat. He did not even blink.

Instead, he gave the tiniest of smirks.

The sound of hooves trudging through snow and pine made the wolf-beast's ear twitch to their direction. Eyes like burning embers still fixed on the two females for a long moment, the Dire Worg slowly turned, his dark furred form disappearing among the mist.

The steps, though, were getting closer.

The rumble of the earth and howling of wolves alerted the senses of the fur-clad hunter. Immediately on-guard, the figure quickly put out his fire and maneuvered to higher ground. The thick mist made it hard to see much ,even from this vantage point... but he could definitely hear the sounds of wolves ... at least, what seemed to be wolves.

however, through the mist, he could make out the shape of massive coils, like that of a serpent. They slithered between trees, causing them to sway from its immense bulk, and watched as its head seemed to dart beneath the mist to claim what he assumed was its most recent prey.

Shuddering at the thought of its power, the hunter began to move out from his roost. Clearly, it was no longer safe to stay here....

The Stone Giant's head slowly tuned to his left. He sensed something in that direction. He had sensed it earlier, but the energies of this world were alien that he couldn't read the ripples that travelled through them like he did in his own land. It was akin to learning a new language, but the test with the tree had clearly helped him to attune to this world. Something was occurring but he couldn't make out what. This was the lifeforce of beings not of this worlds, and when mixed natural flows of this land, it was all confusion but very strong

The others that answered the call no doubt. No time for tests. Hoping to end this "Hunt" as soon as possible, Gigarma began to run towards what he thought to be a battlefield. Each of his heavy footfalls crushed groves of trees into powder, while the earth rumbled and cracked as though an earthquake were occurring.

He had to hurry. the longer he took the more destruction and death could occur.

As the World Serpent made her way through the damp forest, a weird noise had reached her lack of ears. What it was she wasn't quite sure of, but for some reason, her body had automatically chalked it up to "bad news". Others were here. And other creatures would mean more possible, battles, possible allies..and even possible meals!

Massive footsteps shook everything around her. Moving to her left side, she moved faster than she had the entire time she was here! It was time to meet these new creatures..

Ramia only looked at the large wolf like beast and the humanoid beast for a moment before she realized what was going on... and what was expected of her. Very well, she would leave this creature to the arrow holder... yet, its form seemed to fade into the mist..

As if something had scared it away, something more than just them.

Wasting no time, she dismounted her horse and made her way to the hollowed out opening in the tree. She crouched, and looked inside.

There, on her side and caked in dirt and sweat, was a girl, her legs stuck out while the rest of her was curled up. Her legs and arms were unnaturally thin, with very little aside from skin and bone to them, and she weakly looked back to see Ramia's face poke in.

"Are... Are they... Are they..."

"Gone? Yes. The wolves are gone. You're safe now." Ramia reached in for her. "Take my hand, I'll help you."

"Yes ma'am." The girl let Ramia gently pull her out of the hollow and into the open...

As the wolfish giant disappeared into the pines, the beastly archer lowered her bow and kneed her huge steed towards the knight and the skin-and-bones girl. Her ears, however, remained pivoted behind her. She continued to listen, for both the scarlet-eyed predator and whatever had convinced it to move on.

Reddish eyes watched the two humans from a healthy distance. The hairy humanoid had silently commanded her massive, unarmored stallion to trot several horse lengths away from the even more gargantuan, black-clad one, but no closer. She waited for the trapped girl to be lowered from the hollowed tree.

Finally, the wolf-woman's large, pearly fangs glinted as her mouth peeled open.

"Who are you?" she Ramia asked in a harsh, scratchy voice, deep with her size, but high with femininity.

Jormungandr made her way into a large, circle shaped area. Almost like someone decided to cut down every tree in the area and made it a battleground. She knew of no one who would want to drive people into battle on purpose, but she could only assume that was what was happening here.

Finally, she saw the dark shape of a humanoid giant just to her right. It was time to deul.
