A lot of people think the 1998 Godzilla officially weighs 500 tons, and the 1998 GODZILLA Fact Book is often cited as the source. It was discovered on Wikizilla that the guide book says no such thing.

Is there an official source mentioning a weight of 500 tons? There seems to be no basis for this number.

Odd. Now that you mention it, the one book I do have featuring him lists both 1998 and the Baby Godzilla's weights as "Unknown" (不明). But it has their heights listed - 70m [estimated] (推定) and 3m respectively.

Re: 1998 Godzilla's Weight
On the topic of size misconceptions for the 1998 Godzilla, these images popped up on my Tumblr dashboard the other day.
In short, Zilla Jr. standing upright is over 100 meters tall according to not one but two official size charts, making him as tall as some of the taller incarnations of Godzilla.

Re: 1998 Godzilla's Weight
No offense, but is this supposed to be some sort of amazing revelation? We've long known his height when he's in his standard horizontal stance, and rule of thumb is you add around two thirds to something's height when it switches from a horizontal to a vertical stance. So even without having to exactly measure I could have told you that he'd be right around 100 meters when standing fully erect like that. But he literally never does that anyway, so what's it matter?ZillaJr-KaijuKing wrote:In short, Zilla Jr. standing upright is over 100 meters tall according to not one but two official size charts, making him as tall as some of the taller incarnations of Godzilla.

Also, while Toonzilla (and GINO by extension) might be as tall as the 100 meter Gojis when standing erect, he's got nowhere near the mass or the bulk of those Godzillas. He's a stick in comparison to them, so while he might be as tall, he's nowhere near as large as the likes of Heisei Godzilla or especially LPG, so he's still smaller than the other 100+ meter Godzillas. That doesn't excuse his blimp weight, though.

I didn't know there was a rule of thumb for that. It didn't help that most size comparisons out there make 1998 look ridiculously tiny compared to the 100-m Godzillas whether horizontal or upright.Inferno Rodan wrote: We've long known his height when he's in his standard horizontal stance, and rule of thumb is you add around two thirds to something's height when it switches from a horizontal to a vertical stance.
The cartoon one does quite a few times.Inferno Rodan wrote:But he literally never does that anyway, so what's it matter?

He's skinny, yes, but he's the second-heaviest incarnation of Godzilla to date (barring Shin Godzilla, who as far as I know doesn't have an official weight released yet). 60,000 metric tons makes him just as heavy as Heisei Godzilla, slightly heavier than Final Wars Godzilla, and currently second only to Legendary Pictures Godzilla.

No he doesn't. He rears up to varying degrees all the time, but he never stands completely erect like that.ZillaJr-KaijuKing wrote:The cartoon one does quite a few times.

Oh, exactly the same pose? Then yeah, you're right, but he does get somewhat close sometimes.Inferno Rodan wrote: No he doesn't. He rears up to varying degrees all the time, but he never stands completely erect like that.
