Rodan staying a float in one spot

Postby Living Corpse » Fri Jun 01, 2012 6:32 am

Ever notice Rodan could stay in flight above one spot in the Showa films? I miss that. It let's him fight the enemy head on while still being able to turn tail and GTFO if he needs to. I really think they should let him be able to do that again cause removing that ability kinda limits his attack options. I mean Heisei and GFW Rodan are pretty much forced to hit and run or just hug the enemy or be on the ground to peck out an eye. Fire Rodan can at least shoot from far away. Showa Rodan could at least stay airborne and aim for the eyes without having to turn around in circles to remain airborne.

It was a technical limitation. With modern special effects, we could have a much more physically capable Rodan; one that can latch himself onto Godzillas chest and peck his face off, or sit on his back. Also with modern technology we can portray a Rodan with more functional wings, ones that can fold in and allow for more nimble arm movements.

I love Rodan as a bruiser and would love to see that come back. But I don't see a point in bringing back a technical handicap that can be done away with easily.

You're beginning to sound a little too much like Skynet...

The other main issue nowadays is that it doesn't make any sense. The people who will see it and cry "WTF HOW!?!?!" far outnumber the group that will go "Hey, it's just like Showa Rodan!"

Yeah, it's definitely handy for Rodan to stay in one spot, but hovering in the air would probably test people's suspension of disbelief.

Giving him wings that are positioned like a humming birds might help.

That depends on the Rodan. Humming Bird wings might look goofy on a big brute Showa-style Rodan, but could work on something smaller and scrappier like a Heisei Rodan.

That doesn't make him not a pteranodon.

That crates sonic booms. We're talking about a giant cheezy movie monster and we're talking about giving him wings that function like a humming birds, not giving him literal feather covered humming bird wings.

His name is Yasushi Torisawa. He's been doing artwork like that for a magazine titled Space Magazine Uchusen. That's all I know. I can't say I've read any of them, but the Goji artwork looks great.

Here are a couple of discussions we've had in the past:

The Rodans look amazing.

On topic, hovering opens up attack options for Rodan, which makes for better fights. People, well, sane people, know these are just movies, so just watch and enjoy.

Honestly, these are giant monsters that exist in an impossible fantasy world. I can pretty much accept anything I see them do, because...what, does Rodan 'hovering' suddenly make it....too unreal?

The idea of Rodan as a giant, armored, hummingbird-like monster is one I really like.

This.

We already have living poop and a three headed alien that looks like a dragon. I doubt Rodan positioning his wings in such a way he can stay airborne in one spot and fight is really pushing the bounders of reality further then that.
