Terror of Mechagodzilla Discovery

Postby TitanoGoji16 » Wed Mar 21, 2012 1:04 am

So, I was watching Terror of Mechagodzilla earlier tonight, and it got to the black and white montage that showed Dr. Mafune's descent into madness as he tried to tell the world about Titanosaurus. I've been watching this movie (and this scene) for almost my entire life, when I suddenly spotted something I've never noticed before ever.

Apparently Dr. Mafune also discovered Telesdon from Ultraman.

There are a couple more Ultra monsters scattered throughout the film according to the CM commentary.

I think I remember seeing that, now that you point it out. I just never really gave it any thought before. Cool.

So that means Godzilla and Ultraman are in the same universe. ;)

But good find, never noticed it before myself.

I thought it was, but with Godzilla being about infinitely more popular than Ultraman here in the States, it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people don't notice it. It also doesn't help that a version of the film in the proper aspect ratio wasn't even available on home video here in the states until a couple of years ago. It was (probably) harder to spot on the old pan and scan releases.

So what are they? I'm terrible at finding these things myself.

I would expect a Zone fighter monster rather than an Ultra monster.

Telesdon! Loved that weirdo back in the 70s! :huge:

Looks like Mafuni might have been studying a hybrid of Telesdon and Anguirus - ?

I know that this is a TOHO site/forum, but I love many Ultra Kaiju nearly as well....they left their mark on me as a small child of the 1970s....Micras, Icarus, Telesdon, Red King, Woo, etc.....and for some reason, Pig/Garamon scared the SH!T out of me!

How, in a world positively CRAWLING with monsters, to the point where people know enough to comment "something's wrong! Godzilla shouldn't be attacking his friend Anguirus...," could you ruin your career by positing the existence of yet another monster? "Idiot! The only monsters are Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan. And Ghidorah. And Anguirus. And Gaira. And Sanda, ok, but he doesn't count because they were grown from the same cells. And King Seesar. And Mechagodzilla, but he was blown up. And that big spider those guys were talking about in the South Pacific. And the big shrimp. And Kong, too, but he's not a monster REALLY, just a giant anthropoid. And Baragon. And Varan. But that is absolutely it. Fool."

Unless he was, like, a Ph.D. in English or something...

"Professor Mifune, when are we going to get our final grades? It's been three -"
