Monster Discussin #7: Varan

Varan is a great monster design, and I love how he can move comfortably on land, sea, and air. Kind of like a way less powerful Hedorah with less abilities. And he can, um, glide at mach 1.5. That's as fast as Rodan. Wait a second... He can glide at mach 1.5? And Rodan can FLY at the same speed. The @#$?? Since he's gliding, isn't he just basically being carried by the forces outside himself? At mach 1.5? Uh huh.

Anyways he's armored. Kind of like a less armored Anguirus. And his shell is floppy. And he can stand on two legs. Like a less powerful Godzilla with less abilities. At least Godzilla can't fl- oh yeah. Also Anguirus can stand on two legs. Huh.

Well anyway, I love the design. Too bad he can't handle spicy food! Yow!

I like Varan cause he has a little bit of everything. He crawls on fours, he swims, he can stand and he can glide. The only thing he's missing is a 90's beam.

The Varan movie was really boring though.

I think its hard to call him overrated (kaiju-combat wise), since he never fought another kaiju in film. So for all we know, he could be very strong or very weak.
His "city destruction" scenes are fun to watch, well done from an SFX perspective and (at least in the japanese version of the fim) he seems to be able to cause as much destruction in the human world as 1954 Godzilla or 1956 Radon.

His film a a whole wasn't much better or much worse than the 1956 Radon film if you ask me.

Personally I like his design a lot (more than contemporary designs such as Reptilicus, Radon or 54 Godzilla). The design is very old yet it is still among the top 5 kaiju designs of all time if you ask me.

Whenever I comment in the "fantasy matches" section on a fight involving Varan, I always stress that he never fought another kaiju on screen and that because of this my opinion on his fighting skills is purely speculative.

I agree. I just love this design and the suit was convincing other than the floppy shell.

The floppy part was a mistake and they admitted it. They kept that scene in because the village destroying went good and they didn't want to re-build the whole scale minatures again to refilm that.

That's what I meant when I said that. Hellspawn said "because of some silly VS. thread". I agreed with him. I figured that's what he meant.

What do you guys think of Varan? I personally love this guy! His appearance and character are really unique and he's just a cool Kaiju. Wish he had more appearances though.

Varan has a good design, but his film is average. Seeing him in another film would be nice, but that would require a new suit be made. Toho might not be willing to spend that money on an obscure kaiju.
