Was Hedorah alien or mutant?

Look at it like you would Spacegodzilla. He was born in space but he is also a mutation. Likewise Orga is an alien but he was mutated when he absorbed Godzilla's DNA. Well Hedorah was born somewhere in space, somehow ended up on our planet (in film they think it was attached to a meteor) and begun to be mutated by pollution and feed and grow off of it.

^ ...and actually make it work. I'm not generally a big fan of sludge/blob/whatever monsters, but Hedorah is an exception. His final form is one of my favorite suits in the series. Very creepy, very alien. Those big, soulless eyes, the ragged, dripping 'skin', the weird, gurgling roar... it all combines into a really sinister, memorable villain design. The flying form and its mass-murdering acid mist worked very well, too.

I haven't seen his movie in years, unfortunately. I'll need to get the DVD at some point.

"Hedorah's eyes were modeled on female genitalia. I drew the kind of crude picture you find on the walls of a public toilet and handed it to the modeling staff. I said, 'This is what I want Hedorah's eyes to look like.' [laughs] Well, come on, vaginas are scary!" - Yoshimitsu Banno, quoted in Patrick Macias's Tokyoscope: The Japanese Cult Film Companion

Probably cause he is a black death blob. That and I'm sure this topic has been done before? Could be wrong. Anyways, when I was little he scared me. Now I think he's cool.

Do a little psych reading. Yeah, a lot of (patriarchal) societies associate vaginas with all sorts of unheimlich horrors. For a more popular cinematic example, I point to Alien.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
