So, up last night watching some cable and found a mini Godzilla marathon on. Godzilla vs Megalon....oh cool , I'll watch it. So shortly into to it, here comes the box truck scene...I see this in the background of the truck cab:


Couldn't believe it. Then I laugh and think holy crap, my 1st Godzilla movie in the theatre at age 6. Mom how could you??

Ok , I then search online and realize I am not the only one who knew this. Next movie comes on...Terror of MechGodzilla and low and behold more "soft porn". I now see this:



Marathon finishes up with War of the Gargantuas...needed to see that anyway but clean as a whistle PG rated flick.

Apparently in Godzilla '54 there is also one scene with 3 native women topless. Only one scene. To sum it up... Godzilla was not only entertaining but more so than I actually thought as a kid and as an adult apparently.

The nudity in TOMG was always removed in the American versions of the film (TV and theatrically). It’s unconfirmed just how much and what was cut in the initial US release of Megalon but it seems likely that the centerfold bits were always cut (they aren’t in the frequently seen 16mm TV version). They’re blurred out when the film is shown on Comet but they were left intact, probably accidentally, when a widescreen version of the film was shown on SciFi from 2002-2006.

some japanese movies kind of use a woman's breasts as a vector to say that character is human despite their nature in-context (think Patlabor 3) so that could be why they put it in, in 'Terror of MechaGodzilla'.

Maybe there’s something to be said here, but at the same time I always interpreted it as they were just showing the operation, and because it wasn’t sexual at all, there was no real need to hide anything. Regardless of the “Japanese” part you list, I wouldn’t be surprised if just showing skin was a way to show the transformation like you said.


In the case of the truckers in Godzilla vs Megalon, if I had to guess, it was just there for “realism” of skeezy truck drivers having stuff like that in their truck. Additionally, it might’ve been a way to characterize them as “bad” because they eventually abandon the characters and IIRC steal a truck or car at gunpoint once they escape the seatopian.

Worth noting that a lot of other Toho films routinely have shown women’s breasts, briefly. House 1977 and Prophecies of Nostaradamus come to mind.

There's a ridiculous scene in Bye-Bye Jupiter in which two characters have sex in zero gravity and float around naked in the (holographic) cosmos. I think there's also brief female nudity in the Japanese version of Conflagration (1975) but I don't have that version on hand so I can't confirm it.

It's worth noting that all of those films are more "adult" than the Godzilla movies, especially the Godzillas made during the '70s, which were 100% children's films.

Yeah, I think this may have been the case. Similarly, Shoichi Hirose (playing a thuggish bodyguard) shoots a dart gun at a pinup in The Secret of the Telegian.

I never saw the breasts in ToMG until I saw the Japanese version. I don't find them that impressive.

As for the truckers, they were catering to the stereotype of the truck driver. I haven't seen Vs Megalon for awhile, so I have no idea if that was in any print I've seen.

I understand the confusion so I'll explain further, in the movie I mentioned there's a creature with human DNA, and for the whole movie you see it armor-clad but when it is killed at the end, it's shown succumbing to fire and that's when you see it has human breasts. a sad reminder that some part of it was human. So the idea I wanted to say is that they used breasts as a symbol for the human part of the creature. I get a similar vibe in ToMG since the whole point of the character there was that despite being altered into a control device, she was still human.

There's a couple other examples in Japanese works but they don't come to mind atm

The Godzilla anime trilogy does something similar, with Maina repeatedly showing Haruo her breasts.

In the case of ToMG, though, an argument could be made for the exact opposite; that the scene, with plastic breasts housing a robotic interior, drive home the degree of Katsura's inhumanity.

There's also Horror of the Wolf (Which is pretty loaded with nudity) and Blue Christmas, if we're talking about nudity in Toho SFX films. If we're going beyond sci-fi, pretty sure Battle of Okinawa has breasts, as do probably a few other war films, but I don't quite remember. While Toho certainly weren't as sleazy as Toei was in the 70s, they didn't toally shy away from it.

There's also a scene in Samurai Pirate that leads us to believe we saw bare breasts, only for it to be a very realistic statue. But it's enough to fool Ichiro Arashima's boob-crazed wizard character disguised as a fly (You can't make this up).
