I’m not exactly sure, it’d need core elements like an island or planet of monsters where Kong is taken from for it to work for me.

Maybe instead of an island, a group of adventures and scientists venture into a lost world in the Hollow Earth, home to monsters, dinosaurs, and the mighty Kong and the plot revolves around trying to escape and keep the monsters from reaching the surface.

Not an amazing idea but decent for one I came up with in under 3 minutes

One thing no one has talked about (and I think the biggest impact) would be the 76 king Kong remake. At the time, it was really popular in Asia, hence why a ton of knock offs like A*P*E and The mighty peaking man. I imagine Toho would have made a hand full of Kong films themselves after the 76 remake came out. I'm guessing they would have been about the same level of effects quality as the best of Ultraman 80. I'm also guessing either nakano or kawakita would have been chosen for effects director. Nakano would have tried experimenting with close up animatronics to get more detailed animal movements similar to why he used the cybot Godzilla for return of Godzilla.

I wouldn’t like that as a Kong Design specifically, but it’s the type of weird shit that would be cool as it’s own thing. Legitimately creepy.
