This film, along with Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla has got to be my favorite film of the "Matsuri Years" of the Godzilla franchise. I think enjoy it so much just because how fresh and new it was. Gotta find my DVD of it, but even if I do find it, it has skipping problems....

Yeah, the film demands respect because of its ambition and unique atmosphere, it just doesn't gel with me for whatever reason (never liked it as a kid either). I'll be giving it another chance when I get that marathon going, though.

Just finished this movie...again. While not my favorite, it's definetly a great way to kill an hour-and-a-half.

I actually watched GvH about a week or so ago. I would go over how weird I found it, but there's nothing about that that hasn't already been said. I wouldn't consider it a great movie, but definitely worth watching for a good laugh.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah is a high watermark in the franchise. So much so it begins to transcend conventional filmmaking techniques. But I'm biased, it being the first movie I ever saw and my personal favorite.

Normal Godzilla films can be compared to other Godzilla films. Godzila vs. Hedorah cannot. Making it unique in the franchise. Godzilla vs. Hedorah is similar to a very different kind of film. It contains the themes of western drug culture, which was immensely popular in exploitation films coming from Hollywood at the time. The cinematography, use of color, and overall way it was shot, has a distinctly European feel, unlike anything oriental. It invokes a feel to it reminiscent of the films by Italian horror master, Dario Argento.

These two things collide to make something beyond a Godzilla film. This possibly makes it the most important Godzilla film released between 1969 and 1984.

Gonna watch this tonight.

Ironically enough, my copy of Godzilla vs. Hedorah is the only Sony Godzilla DVD I own that isn't recycled.

Watched this last night with the CCL Hong Kong dub. I love this film more every time I watch it. And I know the AIP dub has better sync and dialog, but to me the CCL voices just seem to fit the characters more.

The other day I watched my dubbed version on the Sony disc I have. Nostalgia, man, nostalgia. The general was the funniest out of all of them.

Ah..this is refreshing. Someone who "gets it". The comparison to Argento's work is something that actually crossed my mind the first time I saw SUSPIRIA a few years ago.

ROTFLMAO!!

Best Post Ever!

Finally watched the movie today. Liked it, although I wish Hedorah would have been able to fight during the day, occassionally.

I love Godzilla vs. Hedorah, definitely one of my favorites. I remember when I was a wee-lad I have my mom take me to the video store all the time and I would rent Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster on vhs over and over again to the point where she kept saying no and made me cry lol.

The movie doesn't really get the respect it deserves because its simply... weird. I love the movie and yes even the music, the flying scene I could do without but that's besides the point. The point is during this era it was the 2nd darkest Godzilla movie in the series aside from the original Godzilla.

Does anybody know why Tanaka banned Banno from ever doing another Godzilla movie? I think Banno made a great movie, but was it because he made Godzilla fly that Tanaka boycotted him? Other than Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla and Terror of MechaGodzilla, I really think Gigan and Megalon should have had the same atmosphere that Hedorah had.

I think it was something along the lines of Banno straying from the traditional Godzilla movie, and traditional Japanese movie in general. Somebody said that earlier on here, and it makes pretty good sense.
