If by spiritual successor, you mean it is a fantastic concept that is wasted on a underutilized and easily killable monster, then yes, it is a lot like Destoryah.

Not in the slightest as I can't see any correlation other than "it combines from others" which is like saying Battra is the successor to Rodan because they both fly.
I feel there is more flying kaiju out there than combiner kaiju though.
Well true, but aside from that there isn't really anything connecting the two, at least not anything significant enough to call it a "spiritual successor".

Say what you want about Uprising, the fight scenes are still badass.

But seriously, the plot synopsis has me nervous. It's going to take a lot for this to pull through for me.

I don't like the sound of it.

Using a Jaeger...to search for parents...mkay...and...what about the kaiju?

I'm cautiously optimistic about this, I hope they go back to real robo like the first movie instead of super robo like Uprising.

Yeah, I don't know what to make of that synopsis. What landscape is hostile enough to necessitate using a Jaeger? I'm going to assume/hope they're in the Anteverse somehow, or a new, massive-scale kaiju invasion throws the world into chaos.

At least this confirms the franchise isn’t totally dead. Pacific rim being an anime also makes total sense

Yeah hopefully it is more in line with the first movie. I mean I don't hate the second movie like other people do, I still enjoyed it but out of the two I want more from the first.

I did have an idea for an alternate timeline on how to do a sequel to the first movie without undoing too much. Basically it was a smaller more personal story where some pilots come out of retirement due to three or four kaiju coming out of hiding once the Breach was closed. All the Jaegers are damaged so they have to do a journey to a scrape yard to repair one or two. Perhaps cutting into the story are flashback to the Jaeger war. So more like a lengthy epilogue to the first movie.

Anyway this could be a neat idea I'm guessing maybe a second kaiju wave has happened.

Well another synopsis said it's "kaiju infested lands" so I guess they invaded.

It could be set during the original Kaiju war. Maybe post Yancy death?

Is Del Toro featured in any of the bonus features for Uprising?

For those interested, I interviewed Steven DeKnight at his office last month in Hollywood. VERY honest interview and there's a lot of info about how a big budget monster film is made.

Does anyone know wherever or not Rinko Kikuchi reprised her role for the Japanese dub?

Added in 15 days 4 hours 11 minutes 38 seconds:
Never mind, I just found out that she's dubbed over by Megumi Hayashibara.

(yes, the voice actress for Rei Ayanami)

Finally got around to watching Uprising. Did not enjoy it at all. I love the first movie. But this was a mess. Especially with regards to the characters. Even the recurring characters, who I enjoyed in the first film, were impossible for me to get invested in. The visuals and action were really bland as well so I couldn't even get into the action scenes. I put off watching the movie because the trailers gave me a bad impression. Now that I gave it a shot it still disappoints.

New details about the Pacific Rim anime have emerged! But... it's being produced by Polygon Pictures again. Pretty lame, I wanted Trigger to handle this.
