I'll end up watching this at some point either this weekend or the next and will post my thoughts but in the meantime I will set my expectations to low so I hopefully wont be disappointed. This based on some of the early reviews being posted seems like your either going to like it or hate it no middle ground.

Why did this thread mutate into a Toy Story thread? I was glad Child's Play came out the same weekend so I could ignore the damn thing but then this thread happened. I can't even use the actual Child's Play discussion thread as a distraction tactic now.

Anyways, getting back on topic, Chris Stuckmann said it's pretty good in his review:

I might go see it this weekend.

AVClub's review was not flattering.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

The plot synopsis on Wikipedia was not flattering.

Just curious, have you two ever thought of actually watching the film and giving a try instead of blindly hating on it?

It's just every post you and Eabaker make in here is just hating on the film saying it's garbage. (that's just how I see it though)

I've hardly posted about it since it was originally announced? I said it looked like they butchered it when it was first announced, and frankly I still feel that way. All I said about the film since, like, the first trailer, was today's post about the plot sounding not so great. Because that's just my opinion; it doesn't sound so great.

On the contrary, you've been blindly kissing it's ass lol

The movie seems like it has a multitude of problems just in concept alone. Again. Seems. Just my perspective based on leaks, plot details, clips I've watched, and background information dealing with the franchise's original creators.

I have not passed any judgment on the quality of the filmmaking. At no point have I said nor have I implied that the film is garbage. My objection is entirely to this being done without Don Mancini's involvement, while he is still actively creating new material with the character.

Something I'm pretty sure you and I were crystal clear about when this was announced.

No problem, man. I spend enough time on this board calling people out on things, it'd be pretty hypocritical of me to object to someone else calling me out.

This film is getting some pretty solid reviews. I'm glad.

I'll have to check it out this week.

Still having considerations in seeing this. As said this might be one of those better remakes tbh like Piranha 3D (Though its sequel sucked poop).

haha I actually somewhat enjoy Piranha 3DD for it's sheer stupidity and running with it. Both of them should be retitled Boobs featuring Prehistoric Piranha because that's exactly what they are.

The first one has a bunch half nude spring breakers and 2 nude porn stars as main characters, The second has porn stars, a water park plus Danielle Panabaker and Katrina Bowden. How can you hate that?

True, true. Now that you say it if I just look at Piranha 3DD as some SyFy Original I can get some joy out of it. So bad, its good otherwise as an movie with an budget not so much...

I actually really liked the new Child's Play and I am usually firmly in camp "Oh God, no, please, don't remake it." But, as I was with IT: Chapter One, I was pleasantly surprised. Don't get me wrong, it will never replace the original, but it's well done and different enough to make it interesting and worthwhile.
Spoiler:
Mark Hamill is great as Chucky, who ends up being oddly captivating in a way. He's almost a tragic villain in this - He doesn't set out to be a serial killer (no voodoo spirit here; he's basically an Alexa with arms and legs), but rather he genuinely wants to be Andy's friend and to make him happy, but because of his corrupt programming and Andy's carelessness (seriously, it's roughly 80% Andy's fault that Chucky turns evil), he's sent down a dark path that's almost completely out of his control. The film is also very tense and claustrophobic (in a good way), playing with your expectations and familiarity with the original movie. The ending's sequel hook doesn't quite make sense given the way Chucky works in this movie, but
as a one shot retelling/reimagining, Child's Play 2019 actually works really well and I'll probably be seeing it again.
