Good point, you two. Gamera's not mainstream and yes, he only became popular when MST3K--which is something of a cult hit itself, I think--is what made him popular. I'll also admit that the only way I could get through the very first Gamera was with the help of the Satellite of Love's crew.
But, if we ignore the mainstream, then that still leaves Gamera an opening for a comeback. Streaming anyone?

This is why I say the Monsterverse would help him, it would help him become more mainstream like Godzilla is.

Like I said I would do Gamera vs Godzilla and introduce him like how he was in G3. Fireballs that tear apart nearly half and city and have him want to hunt down and replace Godzilla.

Yeah, the only modern way to reintroduce Gamera to media would be using the Heisei origin and elements. Gamera works so well in a grimdark setting, specially if they ever reintroduce kaiju like Legion or other non-humanoids (which are pretty common in the series).

Except Gamera the Brave was a lighthearted and optimistic film without any origin for Gamera that worked perfectly for the character. Gamera has a lot of flexibility as character

Fair enough.
But damnit, that just makes me angry and makes me wonder: Why it's taking so long to bring the turtle back?

because the studio that owns Gamera sees it as an unprofitable property and no one else is interested in getting the rights to the character. Gamera the BRave flopped so hard it made the studio go "eh why bother?" especially since they put a lot of time and effort into the film

A Gamera video game would actually be badass and full of potential gameplay and story-wise..... but if a new movie still hasn't been made a new game would be impossible to see and even less likely to be funded.

Gamera had never been playable in a game. Playing as one of my favorite characters ever would be such a blast! :D

Totally! We haven't seen one since Gamera 2000 and that was on the PS1 (which I heard was actually pretty good)! Something that had a good combination of brawling and flying shooter sections would be great, especially if there was a something extra like maybe a side-story where you get to play as human characters investigating the secrets of Gamer's world while dodging monster attacks, or mechanic that determines the military's aggression towards Gamera based on how much collateral damage you cause in game.

I fear you might be right, in that Gamera's become unprofitable in the eyes of Daei and Kadokawa, but even then I'm still holding out hope that the Kaiju Renaissance will change their minds. And even if it doesn't, I think that we as fans should keep pushing for new content--even if we have to make it ourselves!

...Hopefully, that's legal.

A Gamera game would be so cool!

I was also thinking about an anime series based on Gamera. He inspired A LOT of elements in Evangelion, so why he shouldn't have his own anime?

Gamera deserves his own anime. Heck the Heisei Gamera Trilogy especially the third movie alone would be a great inspiration for such an adaption.

Why can't Gamera be as known as Godzilla or King Kong...:(

Me too! Glad to see I'm not the only one who dreams of a Gamera anime! :huge:

I think that bringing Gamera back as an anime (and/or manga) could be a viable option for encouraging a Gamera comeback. Especially with the recent trend of adapting anime/manga into live action films. A well made anime could drum up enough interest in a well made new tokusatsu film.

My ideal anime would be something that has a good balance of optimism and gravitas, a bit like a combination of all the previous movies. Or in anime terms, Studio Ghibli meets Studio Gainax.

(Aw shoot, now I want to write a Gamera series...)

Because some people can't lighten up and take a giant flying turtle who breathes fire and protects children (and/or pretty ladies) seriously.
But hey, we live in a world where two of the biggest stars in film are a talking racoon and a walking tree! Weird is the new normal now, and if we drum up enough interest in ol' Gamera, people might actually a sincere, unironic interest this time!

Just show those people the Heisei Gamera Trilogy and for sure they'll change their minds about that "giant flying turtle". ;)

Hahaha that works too!
It sure worked for me ;)

So I was thinking some more about a Gamera anime (and how awesome it would be), and a couple things crossed my mind:
1) Mamoru Hosoda would be a great fit, or at least a good role model. I haven't sat down to watch any of his films yet, but I have seen enough of his work to see that he could be a great fit! Especially when you remember he directed some of the first Digimon movies!
2) If Gamera did get a good anime adaptation, he might finally objectively outdo Godzilla for once!

First and foremost though the supposed Gamera anime needs to be modeled off from the Heisei Trilogy especially his origin. The movies alone has that anime feel to it most notably the third.

^This. The mythological nature of Gamera's origins and the worldbuilding they brought with them are a big part of what made the movies special, as opposed to most other kaiju movies before then, where the existence of the kaiju is usually some kind freak accident or one-off event and the world they lived in was developed until the sequels.
I also agree with the anime-esque natuer of the films, particularly 3. It has all the makings of a strong series, from the set up, to the cast, the action, and story beats. Also, the soundtrack just oozes 90's anime vibes! Observe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe4kw3XxnT4

To be honest, I am beginning to warm up to the idea of Gamera joining the Monsterverse. That is, so long as Toho would be okay with it.

Funny considering Otani composed for several 90s anime. Most notably Toonami staples Outlaw Star and Gundam Wing.
