I adore the Shoaw Gamera films. They are so much film and while some of them may have some cheesy dubbing (thank you Sandy Frank) but that really adds to the fun factor. I can't find any reason to hate on the Showa Gamera films. I just can't find a reason.
All Movie snobs can just f off IMO

I like Gamera, he's a pretty cool monster, but some of the Showa films aren't that great, but I do enjoy the original, Gurion, Gyaos and Barugon. The other ones...not that much.

Funny you say that, I thought Yonggary wa actually okay on comparison to Gappa. Friggin St. Clair company made the movies the highest quality possible. I call bullshit on that -_-
The Gamera movies looked worn, but not near as bad as those two. That's what you get when you shop at Wal-Mart for monster movies.
Actually I got it from Virgin down in Florida a couple years back. I must say, it did have some decent special features all things considered

I meant that I didn't like the movie that much, but yeah, Gappa sucked bad. The video quality was insanely crappy. It was so dark you could hardly see anything.

Yongary beats GAPPA. That's not good for GAPPA either, because I thought Yongary was lower than Gamera: Super Monster.

I still need to get the Shout releases. I don't know why I've been putting that off. I have that boxset by the way, the one with Gappa and Yongary in it. I actually thought Warning from Space was pretty good.
The Shout DVDs are worth it, that's all there is to it. They are cheap enough now that you can find really good deals on them. I'm sure you know, but the only ones without dubs are The Giant Monster and Barugon, which stinks because the first two I think had the best dubs of any of them.
By the way, I'm sure if you dug down deep enough, you could find a few more annoying kids. (The one from Zigra grated my nerves a bit.

I hadn't seen a Gamera film until I saw the first two Heisei movies a few weeks ago. Loved them, can't wait to see Gamera 3 - it's a shame the Showa films aren't as good in comparison (from what I read). Which one should I check out first?

I am not too fond of the original due to the trodding pace. Gojira kept me entertained for some reason that I can't find in Gamera's debut film.

Yeah, if you're looking for major excitement, dont get too excited about this one. It's not worth passing up for a good price, but it's not anything to scream about.

It was pretty much your run-of-the-mill sci-fi monster flick. I think they could have made the movie much better if they had come up with a more "realistic" way of getting rid of him than the space capsule, which was dumb. But with the later movies he gained kind of a personality. Kind of like Godzilla post-Destroy All Monsters, where he became a hero with an attitude.

I think the uncut version of BARUGON is more boring than GIANT MONSTER GAMERA.

The only thing that really pissed me off about that one is that Gamera isn't even in most of the movie. He gets frozen almost as soon as he shows up, and doesn't thaw until almost the end. Then, he beats Barugon in about ten minutes. I thought they could have at least had Gamera getting beat up in the meantime, with the military pounding Barugon and making him weaker so Gamera could beat him, but that's just my opinion.

Cheese is a necessary part of sci-fi. What fun would being a sci-fi fan be if there weren't silly movies out there (like Gamera) to pick on? :P
Has anyone seen the ads for the new MST3K vs. Gamera set? It's been years since I've seen that show, but I remember it being really funny. It will be even funnier to see Gamera get roasted on that show (because he sure was asking for it).

I can't really think of any of those movies that I actually hated. I wasn't a big fan of Viras or Guiron, but I didn't hate them. I just got through watching a bunch of them and they are still not getting old.

Why not just support the official release? It's not expensive.

I guess for those that don't have Netflix, torrents are the only alternative for ones that just want to preview the film. Also (I'm not sure about you guys), basically most of the rental shops (Blockbuster and Hollywood Video) have closed down, with the exception a very small few. Even then, there isn't a guarantee that they would have it, so I can understand why in this day and age, people decide to download to see films.

As long as people support the official releases of films they enjoy, I don't think there is a huge problem with it. Collecting bootlegs is a whole other matter entirely, but I'm seriously NOT trying to open up a can of worms here..

Bumping this thread because my Mill's Creek Gamera double feature comes in the mail tomorrow. This is actually my first venture into the Gamera series (Never had the VHS tapes as a kid) so I'm excited.
